Repairing broken headphone jack?

Hi.

I've bought an iPod Gen2 20GB in parts from a friend.
He told me that the headphone jack was broken but it should be easy to solder back on. Since I had recently broken an xbox I had a pretty good idea what not to do =)

But the damage was more severe than expected. The solder points were broken off as well. So I plan to replace the 8-pin headphone jack with a cable and solder an external jack to that cable.

My question, finally, is.
What solder points do I need to connect to get sound. I don't need the remote control to work.

Best regards,
Mikael Gabrielsson

I have the same problem. I have a 2nd gen (posibly third, if it makes a difference) 20 pod and the jack just broke. I took it to apple and I am out of warranty and can't get it replaced. We opened it up and i saw the headphone jack was rattling around. Upon further inspection It came out. There are 5 solder points on each side, which ones are for audio, like he said, I dont care about the remote.

Also... i tried experimenting with it, and I cant get solder to stick to most of them, there coated in that brown electronics stuff (I can solder, but only know the basics of electronics). Any tips? Please someone help, I can't live long without my pod, and don't have the dough to replace it.

In the US ypu might try PDASmart. They offer allot of services for broken iPods. Their fee is $75.00 + for an Audio Jack repair which is cheaper than a new iPod.

Their web address is: http://www.pdasmart.com/ipodpartscenter.htm

I hope this of some help,

Vance
