What is the best FM transmitter for an iPod?
I just got the Belkin Tunecast II. Needless to say, it sucks! The reason I bought an FM transmitter is for long drives. I guess I didn't think about having to change the station everytime I go out of the area. What is the best FM transmitter on the market? Anybody know?

Now, remember... FM transmitters will never be as good as direct line input to your car's stereo (like using a tape deck adapter). The sound will be fuzzier and the volume will be lower. It's just the nature of the beast.
That being said, there are stickies and other posts on this website that discuss these things. Try a search for Accessories or Transmitter. Specifically, go to the main forums page, go to iPod Gear, and then iPod In-Car Solutions:
http://www.ipodlounge.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=44 (there i just did it for you).
I've tried both Belkins old Tunecast (which only let you pick 4 stations: 88.1, 88.3,88.5,88.7) and I just got Griffins iTrip. I also live in Los Angeles, which is **crammed** with radio stations, which makes it really hard to use an FM transmitter. The iTrip works pretty well, and it's relatively easy to change stations (don't do it at high speeds on the freeway!). You'll see in the link above a big, boxy hardcore FM transmitter that apparently does a really good job (very strong signal) but it's more pricey (?$80?) and kinda clunky looking.
Ya kinda have to pick the lesser of the evils when it comes to FM Transmitters, at least in a large metropolitan area like LA or NYC (Because there are SO many radio stations). Maybe in other less populated parts of the country you won't have to switch stations too often.

I live in KC, MO and there are several open stations. I've used both the original Tunecast and the iTrip and I like the iTrip much better, although i didn't notice any actual "quality" differences, the multiple frequencies on the iTrip is nice.

Don' t fall victim to anybody telling you there is such a thing as "very strong signal". The FCC regulates EVERY personal FM transmitter lagally sold in the US to be limited in output power. The only difference could be in the antenna used, or the location your transmitter is placed in relation to your car stereo's antenna. If you are electronically versed, you *may* be able to boost the output yourself.
That said, the TuneCastII at least lets you memorize four frequencies you know to be available in the area you travel in. I also appreciate the fact that it has a separate frequency display that lets you leave your iPod alone while you are listening. I find that easier to use than the iTrip. I do like the iTrip's design better although it only works with the iPod while the TuneCastII works with anything with a headphone out port.

Wired, you said exactly what I wanted. Each FM transmitter will send the maximum signal strength as possible which means that the signal can't interfear with anything around you (like other cars). The best FM transmitter I have used is the DLO TransPod because it has a line out as well as the FM transmittion. The nice thing about the DLO is that you don't have to carry a dock or mess with the volume on the iPod. I have used the FM transmittion and it seems to get better results than the TuneCast II, but I was always changing my iPod volume to get the right volume level. I don't use the FM transmittion though, the DLO has has a level line out, which give the best quality. I am not sure of you car deck, but you can buy a tape adapter for cheap then get the DLO and you will get really good sound quality, way better than any FM transmitter. If you have a CD deck I would check to see if their are any RCA inputs on the back, if so then you can use the Line out feature. If not then the FM transmitter does a good job. No matter where you live or which FM transmitter you will buy, you will have to change the stations.

I have an itrip and its great for certain purposes, but i DO NOT BELIEVE it is a long term driving solution.
Its worth just spending a bit and getting a input jack on the front of your stereo. (which i think all new head units should have by now considering the proliferation for portable devices)

I love my iTrip!

the lineX one off ebay for ?20 is amazing
blocks out any signal for around 50m
we use for broadcasting throughout our whole house

My iTrip works fine driving around my house. Not much interference. On the other hand, a few days ago when I took a longer trip, I noticed that the broadcast from my iTrip was completely blocked out when I drove to some specific location.

RCA inputs into your stero head, or a tape deck solution. I would never put myself through the misery of a FM transmitter
