iPodRip help
I need to use iPod Rip and my new 80GB firewire external HD to back up my 20GB iPod. I am not sure how best to do this...I would like to just keep the whole iTunes library - once repopulated with tracks on iPod - on the external HD so my regular HD doesn't fill up (it won't all fit anyway). SO - do I actually somehow move my iTunes from my computer to the HD, if so, how do I do that? Any help would be most appreciated. I haven't upgraded to Panther or the new iTunes or iPod software from last week yet, either - waiting until everything is backed up, just to be safe.

No need for iPodRip for relocating an iTunes library.
Follow the instructions here:

That's great - thanks for the info - I will read all those instructions on how to move my iTunes to the external HD...BUT - I do need the iPodRip because, as of now my iTunes is empty because I do not keep everything in there once it goes into my iPod - there has not been enough space on my computer to do that - hence, needing to get the library back from the iPod with iPodRip. Should I put the iPodRip program on the external HD as well?

I see.
In that case, ignore my previous post.
Use iPodRip (installed on the computer's HD) to copy the iPod's music to a directory (this is configurable, I'm sure) on the external HD.
Delete everything that may be in your iTunes music library.
Change the iTunes Music Library Folder (Preferences-->Advanced) to a folder on the external drive (NOT where iPodRip put your music).
Enable both "Keep my Music Library Folder Organized" and "Copy new additions to iTunes Music Library Folder".
Use "Add to Library..." in iTunes to add the folder of tunes that iPodRip put on the External HD. This will *copy* the music from the location that iPodRip used into the iTunes Music Library Folder, and set up the XML library database accordingly.
Because iTunes COPIED, and not MOVED, you can now delete the files/folder that iPodRip created.
Done!

Thanks - that sounds like a plan - I will try it tonight. So, if I am understanding this correctly - from then on after I change the advance preferences - my iTunes library will be stored on my external HD and when I get my new iPod I can get my music back from iTunes from there? Are you also suggesting that I won't need to use iPodRip for anything after that? Sorry - just want to be clear! :)
