Enconding Advise
Please choose the appropriate forum for this topic. Thank you. Hi There,
I just got a 20Gigs iPOD and I would like some advise of you guys... It seems this is the right place to be.
1) What format should I encode my CD collection AAC or MP3?
2) What Bit rate should I encode it for top sound?
At present I have tested the AAC 224 kbps, sample rate and channel in Auto. But I am not that happy. The sound is not so clear as a CD.
I would like have a good balance between compression and space... Apparently AAC is the way to go forward, seems MP3 is a bit behind
Please feel free to comment. Your advise is appreciated.
Regards,
Golmos

What do you mean by 'not so clear as a CD"? Did you rip into a lossless format as well and test both on the same system?
If you haven't, you should rip the same CD into AAC, Apple's new lossless format, and AIFF/WAV. Then you can compare lossy to lossless to see how much compression you're willing to live with.
MP3 is more universal but AAC supports things like bookmarking. And many people feel that at lower bit rates, AAC sounds better, leading to more songs on the iPod.
While asking advice is good, you need to do your own tests with your own equipment. This is a very personal and subjective thing.

yep, AAC is the way to go.
actually, since you are not satisfied with 224 ACC then you can go ahead and rip into ALE, Apple Lossless Encoder
make sure you are running iTunes 4.5 and update the iPod firmware to 2.2
if you keep these ALE files on your computers hard drive, you could then rip them to a smaller AAC file to transfer to your iPod while keeping the pristine original source

Hi MikeM & Melk,
Thank you for ur promt reply :D .
I will have a go with AAC at 192 and 128 kbps instead of 224 kbps follwoing the advise of Mikem
Melk thanks for your tip about ALE I didn't consider the option but now i will... ;)
if other ipoders send their encoding preferences advice will be great!
Best regards
