CD and Magnifying Glass
Today, after listening to my ipod, and reading some notes, I came home. I plopped the pod into the dock, which wasn't actually plugged into anything--i just set the iPod in the dock itself. The backlight came on and it showed a blank screen except for the title bar which had the pause symbol and "Notes" and the battery bar. Nothing in the main window. I took the pod out of the dock and tried to go back to the main menu. It was making clicking noises like it should everytime I scrolled or pressed a button, but nothing appeared on the screen. Getting a little worried now, I plugged the pod straight into my powerbook--no dock. After a few seconds, an icon appeared on the screen. It was CD with a magnifying glass. There was a loading bar underneath it, but it never made any progress. The icon was animated, but nothing else was happening at all. Now very worried, I reset my pod (menu and pause/play). The apple logo appeared and everything seems to be working just fine.
I guess my question was really this: What the heck happened?? I've never seen this icon before, nor have I ever really ever had my pod freeze like that. Any insight into what happened and what may have caused it? Thanks!

It happened to me too! I'm sorry, but I don't know why. Mine just froze for awhile. Do you have an iTrip? I think that's what caused mine.

Your iPod went into Disc Scan mode for some reason. Not sure why, but it ran its own diagnostics and fixed whatever problem it had by itself. Heck, be happy it did it on its own and didn't just die on you...
You can make it do this by resetting your iPod and while the Apple logo is on the screen press and hold the <, >, select and Menu buttons...
