Itunes- organization?
What is the best method to keep your tracks organized on the ipod through itunes? Without the hierarchy method that is generally used on the actual computer, it seems like it could get messy.
The method I've been planning on using (I just got it yesterday) is to label each playlist as:
"R&B Stevie Wonder Innervisions"
or
"Indy Death Cab for Cutie Transatlanticism"
So as to keep all the genre's together, and the artists together within that group.
Is there an easier way to keep things grouped together like this? Is there a way to use a hierarchy I haven't discovered?
Thanks for any input!

You're making playlists for individual albums?

Just browse by genre.

I haven't even tried it out yet, right now I'm just trying to figure out how people organize things like artists and albums on ipod.
Half of my files don't even have "Genre", and even something like Stevie Wonder, one album was labeled "Dance" and another was labeled "Soul", so I don't want 2 albums by the same person scattered far away from eachother. It seems like it would be really confusing that way.
And there are songs I've downloaded that just don't have all the 'tag' information, it's just a song title. How do those fit in?

The key is to remember that iTunes (and the iPod) organizes your music library based solely on the music ID tags (not the filenames). If your ID tags are clean and complete iTunes works very well in keeping your music library organized. Simply browse by genre, artist, album, etc. to find the tracks you want.

You should start by properly tagging as much as you can. The iPod will then have everything set up for you to browse by artist, album, genre, song, and even composer if you have it.

Does anyone know any good ID Tagging software I could use, hopefully something that can do tracks in batches?
I guess I'll have to see how everything works in the ipod before trying anything out...

ID3Tag-It, Tag&Rename, Tag & M3U
I've heard these mentioned a lot around here but have no experience with any of them.

Thanks! I'll try them out.

Of course, iTunes itself allows you to edit batches of tags at once. Just select numerous tracks and right click to Get Info. You can then add or edit information common to all the tracks.
Four other basic organizational tips:
1. Use genres, composers, and albums to sort material. You can add the columns you want to see (under Options) and these relate to the categories on the iPod.
2. Use the Eye (next to the Now Playing window) to see a list of your artists and albums. (Of course, this is only helpful once you've completed your tags.)
3. No need to use Playlists for albums, artists, or other groupings that iTunes sorts automatically. Instead, use them for your own groupings (e.g. Elob's Driving Music and Elob's Music to Seduce the Girl Down the Hall with the Funky Glasses). You can add a song to more than one playlist.
4. Don't forget Smart Playlists (search for other threads here), but save those until you've mastered the basics.

Yes, there's not need really to use another tagging program except for possibly when you first start out. ID3-Tagit and the others will allow you to tag based on the path and file name. Which can be handy.
But aside from that initial batch process, you can batch tag in iTunes just fine.
Also, the key to understanding how it all works it making sure you have "Browse" mode turned on in iTunes. Just click the "eye". Why they didn't have it on by default is beyond me...
