New version of iTunes?

Hi all,

I have had some major problems with the version of itunes which came with my ipod. My PC locks up or resets itself even when I just play music in the Library.

I formatted my PC, as I thought I had a virus. Everything was running ok until I put itunes back on, so I am pretty certain this is the problem.

I do not know what version it is (as I am not posting this from home). But I have downloaded the latest version. Has anyone else experienced this problem, and does the latest version fix it?

Many thanks.

p.s - I am running Windows XP Pro

I think the version that comes with the iPods is 4.1, I've never used it as I upgraded to 4.2 as soon as I had all the software installed, I'm now using 4.5.

I've never had any problems with the latter two versions. :)

Edit: I'm running Windows XP Home.

Also...
Is there updated software for the actual ipod? (the auto synching etc...) As I'd rather use newer software than what is on the ipod disc.
I have been on the apple site and cannot find it.

There is new iPod software available:

Goto http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/

Just download it and run the updater

Note: you need this update to run iTunes 4.5 (i think)

Actually no. 4.5 works just fine without the iPod being updated. You really only need to update the iPod if you want to use some of the newer features of iTunes in your iPod, like grouping.

I haven't encountered any problems using my non-updated Ipod this way with 4.5. Perhaps I will update later if there is a real reason to, but from what I see, there isn't for me at least. Unless the iPod sound has really been improved in some way. I have heard conflicting views on this.
