iTunes CPU HOG!

I have both a Mac and a PC... when i am ripping or updating iPod, on either platform my computer comes to a CRAWL!! On my PC i noticed that during ripping of a cd, it uses almost ALL of my CPU!! I cant even browse the net! Its quite similar on my dual G5!!! This needs to be fixed. Comments?

Oh man, i had the same problem. I couldnt do ANYthing while iTunes was running. Major bummer...but 4.5 seems to be much much better. I cannot startup an app or ill get skips, but atleast now if IE is already running i can surf, no prob.

Agreed. But, I forgot to mention that on my office PC (dell) I have no problems. Its the gateway at home that gets bogged down.

That's strange. I run iTunes and Photoshop on my G4 Powerbook all the time. I surf the net, and run other programs with no problems.

If it wasnt happening on both machines I'd say to check for a firmware or driver update from your cd burner's manufacturer.

I have a dual 1gig G4 and have not noticed any ill effects while iTunes is running and everything is quite silky even while running multiple apps. On my PC at work though it does bring it to a crawl.

Can't say about the PC, but I have a 1gig TiBook and I have nearly ten apps open all the time, with iTunes being one of them. I usually have iTunes playing music while I work, with PhotoShop, Illustrator, Acrobat, InDesign and/or DreamWeaver, plus Safari, Mail, iCal, and sometimes iChat. I hop back and forth on all these apps, as my work requires it. I even have iTunes ripping sometimes. I seem to have not seen that much slowing of my machine. I can't imagine it'd be that bad on a G5.

I have to say though, after security updates of the past months, I have seen more beachballs than I used to.

I've never had any problems running itunes (4.2 and 4.5) on my PC with windows XP - multiple applications usually running at the same time
