Converting AAC to MP3...Help...
My wife has an "Archos" jukebox mp3 player and I have an iPod. I had originally ripped a large portion (luckily not all) of my CDs into AAC format for the iPod. I should have looked at the preference option to rip in MP3 or AAC but I did not know at the time. I now need to load all of my AAC songs into my wife's Archos but Archos does not read AAC format.
I am a newbie with iTune and iPod. Can someone please let me know what is the fastest way to locate all of my AAC files and do a batch convert to MP3s.
Thanks,
Tony.

In iTunes library, in the bit-rate column, it will show you if a track is in AAC or whatever. As far as doing the converting in batch, I haven't found this possible in iTunes. Once you locate the files you can highlight the songs that are lined up one after the other and right click on the songs and click on 'convert to mp3' and I think it will allow you to do it this way. But if the songs are not lined up then you can not convert in batches.

Thanks honeybee1236 for your reply...just started my batch convert per your instructions. It is excruciatingly slow though. I also see "Protected AAC" files that I have purchased on iTunes. I have not tried to convert these, but I would think that I will not be able to convert these, correct?

You can't convert 'protected AAC' files. What you have to do is burn them to a blank disk and then re-import them into iTunes as mp3's. This method will work because this is how I did my purchased music in AAC protected format. This is the only way you can convert them.

Never thought of doing that. Thanks! That will help me out a bunch!

your welcome.

Honeybee, iTunes will let you convert any amount of your songs in batch. Just click the Kind heading (select Options to show it if it isn't already visible) and it will arrange all of your files according to their file type. You can then select all of the files of a particular type and convert them all at once.
One other thing: If you want to convert to any bit rate or file type supported in iTunes, then go into Preferences and select the type and bitrate you want to convert to under the Import tab. Then, when you right click on one or more songs in the main window, the "Convert to" option will change to whatever type and bitrate you selected. Cool, huh?
TVH, yes it's slow. (Converting file types for music files is one of the most computationally difficult things you will ever do on your computer.) But with the suggestions above, you can set it all up and convert hundreds or thousands of files at once. Maybe get it started before you go to sleep and they'll be done when you wake up.

P.S. iTunes also lets you delete files from the library without deleting them from your hard drive. Not a bad idea if you think you might use the old files again in the future.

Thanks, I actually forgot about that.

FYI, you can also make non-contiguous selections by Alt-clicking on songs. Then using the Convert menu command will convert all highlighted songs, regardless of how they are sorted or ordered.

this is a great thread but the procedure wont work with AUDIO BOOKS as the files are much too large to burn to a disk. for example, M. Moores Dude Where's my country came in 2+ hour chunks. What to do? Thanks!!!!
