How Are Your MP3 Files Organised?

Well, when I first got my iPod and installed iTunes, I was asked if i wanted iTunes to organise my music for me... Well, I said no, because my collection is very large and well organised and didnt want iTunes to mess it up. But now I was just wondering how does iTunes organise it and if its beneficial in any way.

This is how mine is done...

G:\Music\Artist\Album\Artist - Track Number - Track.mp3

So how is yours done and do you advise using iTunes option?

I love letting iTunes manage it for me. If I make a change in iTunes it moves the file for me too, always keeping things in sync.

It uses the Artist\Album\Track # Song name layout. I think you can turn off the track number if you do not want it as part of the file name. And if the album tracks have various artist, it will throw the tracks into a "compliations" folder for you if you check the "part of a compliation" option (or if it downloads from CDDB that way). It just seems amazingly easy this way and I don't have to worry about iTunes not knowing where a file is...ever.

That being said, if you are happy with your structure maybe you should keep things the way they are. Perhaps someone else could explain a downside to letting iTunes handle it. For me, I don't see any.

I don't get it, how can you do either of those things with itunes? I just downloaded it last night, and it doesn't seem to support any form of hierarchy, all I can seem to do is create and endless barrage of playlists.

The closest heirarchy you can do is either making a playlist that has files from a bunch of one artist's files, or create a playlist for every album.

How are you doing all this organization in itunes??

Were not so much doing this in iTunes as such. Were talking about the actual MP3 file and how it is stored...

Are yours in My Documents\My Music\iTunes\ ???

In iTunes settings it ask's if you want to let it organise your music for you.

I don't see how itunes even does organize music- it just takes all your files and makes one huge rambling library of it...

Is there something I haven't figured out? It seems to have no organization methods to it at all!

I do mine manually, with AnaPod an' Tag & Rename. That way if something doesn't go right, I have no one to blame but myownself! ;-)

As usual, my 2 cents worth! ;-)

Is it still the same set up that way, i.e. no real subfolders or hierarchy?

Steverinoz, you must not have your iTunes set up to auto manage your files. That's the only thing I can think of. Because when you do, it neatly puts everything in order by artist. If you change the artist or album names in iTunes, it will also change or move the file at the same time.

Sounds like you're speaking of working within the actual program. Hit ctrl+B, that''l get you preview panes sorted by Genre, Artist, Album.

Two step process to get iTunes to organize your files.
(Music\Artist\Album\song)

Step 1:

Change the iTunes Music Folder (Optional)
And those two check boxed.
