iTunes 4.5 wont play anything
I have just upgraded from 4.2 to 4.5 and the same with the iPod updater.
Everything seems to be fine except that when i try an play any file the speaker symbol appears without the little soundwaves and the file won't play. I have tried mp3's m4a's aac nothing. I have tried to find a reference to this problem but so far drawn a blank.
I then unistalled 4.5 but got the newer library message with 4.2. I renamed the library file ...xml.old but still no joy.
Please can someone help out
Cheers
John

First, try this:
Go to Start--> Settings --> Control Panel --> Quicktime.
Under the "Sound Out" pulldown menu, try a different setting (waveOut, DirectSound, alternate soundcard perhaps?)
If none of those options are fruitful, try reinstalling Quicktime (Standalone) from Apple's website.

Jarrod,
thanks but there isn't any sound out option, there is a sound in but thats chocolate fire grate stuff.
Even if this were the problem would it explain iTunes not even attempting to play the file? The speaker icon appears but no sound waves and the track progress doesn't advance.
Cheers

It sure would.
iTunes uses QuickTime to play.
If QuickTime's Sound Out option is broken (and missing), there will be no audio output.
Try reinstalling QuickTime 6.5. --> http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/standalone/

Jerrod,
sorry to have wasted your time. I had to rebuild the laptop recently and i had forgotten to reinstall the driver for the sound card, so despite following your good advise i wasn't getting anywhere. It was only when i loaded winamp that i got a message saying 'stupid boy, no sound card driver....'
Many thanks
john

Hey... no problem.
No time is wasted on a forum-- someone will search and find this thread useful... either from my post or yours. :D
