Plugged in Firewire and saw smoke

I thought i would be cool and make my own car charger for the 2g 10 gig i have. idiot me i mixed the + and - wires and as soon as i plugged it in to test charge i smoked. i quickly unplugged it and tried turning it on. everything worked fine. i thought i lost my ipod. i listend to it the rest of the day and all was well. when i got home from school i plugged it in to charge and upload some more songs, it wouldnt charge. it would be recognized in my pc but would not take a charge. i figured i burnt something out on the screen and it was charging but not showing it. the next morning it wouldnt turn on but instead it showed a weak battery and ! sign and then shut off. i opened it up and saw that a lil fuse looked burnt. i tried replacing the burnt fuse with a lil wire that i soldiered on . i figured i would bypass the burnt fuse with this wire. i put it back together and nothing. no charge . i plugged it in to the pc and it shut off the computer entirely. what am i doing wrong? do i need a new motherboard or do you think it is still possible to fix? is there anyone out there that can help me out? i can try and take a picture of the area if that helps. please guys, i need your help. if i can fix it then i need to sell it as is. like i said, everything works fine except that it didnt charge the battery. thanx again

It sounds like you need a new fuse, you can't bypass a fuse. It needs to be replaced and if that doesn't work then you will need a new mother board for your iPod because the wire that you soldered to it fried the mother board. I would try taking off the solder and replacing the fuse. You have to get the exact one, if your iPod is still in warranty you might be able to get it fixed. I think opening your iPod voids the warranty though. There might be some websites that offer iPod repairs but you will probably end up spending $100-$150. Try replacing the fuse, if that doesn't work then look around for website that repair iPods. You might even be able to send it into Apple for $99 to see if they won't replace the battery and maybe they will fixe the error. If not then start saving your money for a new unit or try ebay for a 2nd generation 20 GB unit, I saw one on there the other day for $150. Sorry to hear about your iPod though.

thanx buddy for the reply, i would have no problem replacing the fuse if i knew what kind to get. it was a little burnt around the area near the fuse and the fuse was cracked in half. i could not tell of any writing on it so i would have no idea what it would be called nor where i could go to get a fuse. i live in southern california and i guess i could try radio shack or maybe fry's. i will try to post a pic of where it would be and maybe someone can tell me what it is and where i could find it. it is the fuse ( black rectangle) just right of the firewire socket. there is only one fuse there so there shouldnt be any confusion. the top right corner of the motherboard. if anyone out there can help me out that would be great. i did look online and i ended up winning a 20gig 2g today on ebay. i will try and fix this one up and give it to my girlfriend in hopes it will quiet her down till her mini gets here. if i can get this one working i will just have to part it out. what is a good price for a lcd screen and battery that holds 100% charge?

thanx again

You might try sending an email to these people. ( http://www.pdasmart.com/ipodpartscenter.htm)
They should be able to tell you the fuse you want.
