General questions about updating the firmware

I have a 3rd gen 10 gig POD. The firmware listed on the "about screen" is 2.0.2--I guess that means it is version 2.0. My question is--what improvements would I see by updating to version 2.2? Is it even worth it? All these horror stories about ITuines 4.5 and the firmware stuff has me nervous. I have had no problems with the POD and would like to keep it that way. I don't think I will ever upgrade but what was wondering what I am missing out on, if anything.

Same question applies to Itunes 4.5. I am running 4.2 itunes and have had no problems.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.....?

Certainly a valid position. The choice is ultimately yours, but IMHO, updates are a good thing. Bug fixes, new features... why not?

Besides, I wouldn't call upgrading a "nightmare." Remember that on the message boards, all you're going to see is people's problems. Nobody signs on to say "it went great!". The 'problem people' are actually a VERY small percentage of customers. Upgrading went perfectly smooth for me... doing both iTunes and the iPod took all of 5 minutes.

The new stuff is nice:

New Firmware:

2.0 to 2.1
On-the-Go playlists... that sync back to iTunes
Fewer bugs/crashes
Better battery meter handling
"Music Quiz" game
Support for voice recorders and photo uploader accessories

2.1 to 2.2
Fewer bugs/crashes
Apple Lossless Encoder support

New iTunes:

4.2 to 4.5
iMixes -- Publish your playlists to the music store.
Party Shuffle -- essentially a play queue-- great for parties/DJ or uninterrupted personal listening.
Links from your library to the store.
Apple Lossless Encoder support

I'm considering updating the firmware on my 3G iPod from 2.1 to 2.2. But first, I'd like to know what's involved in the process (do you download the updater and then launch the iPod updater software that came on the CD, or what?) [Please excuse my stupidity, as I've only had my iPod for 12 days.]

Go to www.apple.com/ipod/download

Get the appropriate updater (Mac/PC).

Plug in iPod.

Run the Updater.exe that you just downloaded.

Choose "Upgrade" -->> "Restore" should only be used when necessary-- it wipes out the iPod completely. "Upgrade" does not.

azdude_15GB

Everything went fine with the firmware upgrade and no major issues occurred with the Itunes upgrade except when I opened Itunes for the first time-- the program locked up and I couldn't eject the pod. I killed the various itune and pod processes and then was able to disconnect the POD--then I reconnected it and ran Itunes again. So far no problems at all.

Thanks.
