All Ipod Data Erased - Any Ideas?
-Docked my 30Gb (2nd gen) iPod this morning and it gave the customary greeting sound.
- it then started charging
- 5 minutes later the sound went off again and the magnifying glass + hard disc icon appeared as the did the progress bar that accompanies them.
- 20 minutes later the progress bar had finshed filling up and all i was left with was the magnifying glass and a big tick icon.
- 'great' i thought - it's scanned the iPod for problems and found everything to be fine.
-WRONG - it has deleted EVERYTHING - about 25Gb of songs.
- AND when i dock it now, i get a padlock symbol from within iTunes which i can't seem to 'unlock' and the readout at the bottom of the iTunes window says '18.6Mb Used / 9.31Mb free although' there appears to be no data on there at all!
Can anyone suggest what has happened and if there is anything i can do to unlock the padlock icon?
kind regards

Welcome to the 'lounge!!
First of all... which of the "finished" icons did you get after your 20 minutes? Here are your choices:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60943
If you saw a good one, great. If not, your iPod may need repair. :D ;)
Second... If you're speaking of the 'lock' I think you may be, the iTunes padlock simply means that your iPod is in use, and is not able to be disconnected. You should be able to click on the "Eject" button to get it to go away.
Third... about your disk space usage:
It could be that your music is still there, and instead, the iPod's master database (iTunesDB) is corrupted (and therefore, you don't see any music). This has happened to me. You *may* be able to fix it. Install Ephpod (www.ephpod.com), and try using the "Rebuild DB from iPod" feature (or something similar... sorry). ;)
If that doesn't help you, then you'll probably need to "Restore" your iPod using the iPod Updater (to wipe it clean and reinstall the iPod OS)... and lose anything that may still be on there. After that, though... you should be back to normal.

Yours is the second post I've read today with the exact same problem. Your iPod ran it's disc scan mode and found no problems (the check mark). Try re-setting it, hold down the Play and Menu buttons together for about 5 seconds and see what happens...

hmmm.
i'm on a mac (g5 / panther) and as far as i can make out in order to get ephpod up and running i have to purchase the 'mac opener and ephpod' bundle - hitting the download button that is made available only downloads an .exe file which is no use on a mac as far as i know. so, in essence what i'm saying is there isn't a freeware mac version of ephpod available (that i know of).
any suggestions?
(oh, and i've tried the reset too - no use unfortunately).

Just for grins, try running Disc scan and /or diagnostics mode. The combos can be found here (http://ipodding.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=Sections&file=index&req=listarticles&secid=4). There are some Mac apps that will allow you to look at the songs on the iPod. Look under the Downloads section at the top of this page and see what you can find...

I am in a similar boat.
I had to reinstall Panther on my laptop and since I was having problems with some unknown system errors I did a clean install. Before I did this I was told it would be relatively easy to reinstall my music collection from my 3g iPod back to my hard drive.
I installed PodUtil 2.0 after the clean install but when I plugged the iPod in iTunes still launched. In the process it gave me some window saying something to the effect that to restore my library back to this computer click OK.
Thinking it was going to transfer my music back to the hard drive I said OK.
It seems to have wiped my iPod clean as there is no longer any files on the iPod drive. I know it only erased the file fork resources and the data is still there for the time being so I was wondering if there is anything I can do to get my music back and then transfer it back to my hard drive.

hey all,
Having same problem...
After mounting the pod it goes into disc scan mode. Scan gives me the 'OK' check mark but is unable to connect to iTunes. Must force-quit iTunes and then force-restart the pod in order for it to disconnect. Repeat process again upon mounting.
All music is still available for listening on the pod, but playlists have disappeared.
So my question is:
How does a mac user rebuild the iTunesDB with out erasing the music?
