problems loading songs into ipod

sorry if this is a repost, but i an ipod noob here and couldnt find anything regarding my issue

i just got my ipod 3 days ago and upgraded my firmware to 2.2 and itunes 4.5. but the problem i am having is transfering songs from my itunes to the ipod. when the ipod is connected to my computer, itunes sees it and itunes recgonizes music on it. but when i disconnect the ipod, there are no songs loaded and the hdd is empty.

any ideas or help?

also, when my ipod is connected and in itunes, i click on my ipod, but it says i have used 22+ gigs and have 14+ gigs free. but the thing is i only have a 15 gig ipod. dont know if this make a difference or not, its just an fyi
