Yes, that's pretty much normal for both the full-size iPod and the iPod Mini.

The gain is high on some songs leading to distortion on using the EQ. On MP3's I use an app called MP3gain to reduce gain so I can use the EQ without distortion. On AAC files I just adjust the gain in iTunes if too high.

I have this problem too, but it doesn't matter what EQ setting I use.

For some songs, not all, when I have high volume, there is a crackling sound that seems to occur at loud or intense moments in the music. It sounds almost as if the speakers are about to blow. (I am still using the apple ear buds, but I don't want to invest in better headphones just yet, if this problem is going to continue)

I have searched for the MP3Gain, and it seems like a good product, but it looks like it runs under windows only. I use Mac

However, it also appears to me that MP3Gain will make the song quieter, but will this solve my problem? wont I have to turn up my iPod volume to compensate for the loss of volume and if so, will I still experience the crackling?

Thanks,
V

ok, I found a Mac product which appears to be similar to MP3Gain: iVolume http://www.mani.de/en/software/macosx/ivolume/index.html

but my question still remains... If I use this tool to reduce the volume of my files, wont I have to compensate by turning up my iPod volume? and will this keep my headphones from having this crackling problem?

Thanks,

I find that lowering gain did not effect my ability to turn my music up louder. I listen plenty loud but after using MP3gain do not have distortion at high volume. I'm not an audio engineer so I don't know how it works just know that t does work for me.

Try just a few of your worst songs with the new SW you found and see if it works for you. Good luck. It made all the difference in the world to me. I thought the iPod unusable before MP3gain. Now I love it.

Quick question, tried to do a search but didn't find anything. What is "EQ?" What does it do?

EQ = equilizer. It's supposed to allow you to adjust the sound at certain frequencies to suit your ears. In the case of the iPod, the EQ is just good at distorting sound. Apple considers the EQ a feature.
