Earphones for jogging - which are best?

Recently bought an iPod mini specifically for jogging (4 times week). Not exactly thrilled with the standard Apple headphones. Can spend up to 250 or so, but prefer to spend less. I like a solid bass sound, but I'm more concerned about comfort while running - and sweating - which I do a lot. I'd appreciate hearing from others with experience with earphones and running

You might want to try the Shure E3C. They are very lightweight and have a small profile. With the foam sleeves they cannot fall out and will insulate your ear and the 'phone from sweat. The cord is well-designed and there are no microphonics issues from it. Bass is nice and tight and adequate -- no booming or buzzing. You can get more base if you move up in price but at $179 msrp the E3C is an excellent choice with good price-value.

ps I have run a lot with the Shure E3C and it works quite well!

Thanks for the reply. Sounds good, but would also like to hear from anyone using the ER?4P Etymotic Research too. Anyone using them for regular running? I wish I could just try some one, but I live in Japan and don't know of any store carrying either the E3C or ER-P. So I'm reliant on other people's input.

Don't even THINK about Etymotics. The cord they use is very thin and as a result there are significant problems with microphonics. Every time the cord moves against your shirt you will hear it in your ears! Every footstrike -- really, it's not what you want for running. Shure uses a thicker wire and routes behind your ear. You can then snug them up even further with a small adjuster thing to keep them snug against your neck. This is what you need for running -- trust me!

OK - that sounds very convincing. I appreciate your feedback very much. So, Shure it shall be, unless anyone else anyone has any last minute alternative suggestions. (just being careful!) Once again - thanks a lot,,, I was just about to order the Etymotics.

Just be aware that noise isolation earbuds like the Shure e3c or the Etymotics are a completely different experience than regular earbuds. A cheap way to experience this before dropping $100+ would be to wear some wax earplugs while you jog. (or anything that can temporarily block your ears from all sound).

If you feel comfortable with that, then you should have no problems with getting shure earbuds.

OK - I'll try that. Now, that I'm now re-considering the Shure e3c (thanks to "Random Person's" posting) I checked the product review for them on this site, and the author concluded that the lower end e2's were his choice (considering the nearly double cost of the e3c). Are the e3c's possibly overkill for me? Remember I only use my iPod for running. Obviously I expect the e3c's will sound better, but as the I only use them for running, and as the reviewer said the e2's are pretty good... - or are there other compelling reasons to get the e3c's - like fit, cables, etc... - thanks once again. Feel I'm almost ready to hit the order button!

Do the e3c pick up mouth noise? I have a pair of E2Cs and have to take them out when I eat something, because I hear the chewing noise through the earphones.

I'd imagine so, as the two "canalphones" I own (see sig below) both do that. There's really no getting around the issue though, unless you want to go back to a normal ear-bug or a traditional headphone.

When I ride/run I just use a $20 pair of Sony street styles (behind the neck), they sound fairly good for what they are, can take a beating, will still play even though soaked with sweat AND you will be able to hear a car coming toward you from behind or somebody yelling "hey look out!" etc. From a safety standpoint, I think the Shures don't fill the bill.

The sony street style does well for me as also. they're not so expensive that I worry about them being in the gym bag among other things, but they still offer decent sounds while working out. Absolute no worries about them falling off while running or biking the bumpiest of routes.

Sony Street Styles... Hmmmm the previous two postings sound quite reasonable. I might get Sony for the gym and the Shure or another high-end one for non-sports use. I just checked the Sony site - and they have quite a few in that series, some with very different designs. Which are you recommending? I run on a treadmill indoors, one hour/day. That's all I want them for. I have a mini iPod. Thanks in advance...

I have some Ety's and I'm not sure how they would be for jogging -perhaps too much isolation, and there is the microphoning issue, but here is a mod that can eliminate that problem: http://www4.head-fi.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=46043&highlight=microphonics

Bought them. Thanks to everyone for the advice on headphones for jogging. I bought the Sony MDR-G74SL - street style. Ran for an hour with them on today and happy to say they worked out fine. I'm sure the Shure's sound way better (as for the price difference - they shuld), but for jogging I'm happy I got these relatively inexpensive numbers that are very comfortable. Final note,,, the short cord that many complain about is great in my case, as I use them with an iPod mini on the arm band. The short Sony cable is perfect - as is the braided material. So far no regrets. Next... I might start looking for a good "in-ear" set for home use. Thanks again to everyone.

I would advise the Bang & Olufsen earphones. They are what I use for running and working out.

They do not isolate you from your surroundings so you can still hear a car horn or someone yelling at u to move out of the way or watch out.

Also most importantly, they do not fall out of your ear no matter what you do.

Finally, they are one of the best looking heaphones out there.

Negatives: Lack of bass, and price is not cheap.

I have just bought the 4G 40gb ipod, and also a pair of Shure E3c headphones, with a view to using them while running, but apart from problems with the ipod jamming up, i also found that with the earphones being of an isolating type, i.e stuck right in the ear, that when i walk or jog with them in, the sound of my feet hitting the ground drowns out the music, so i was none to chuffed about spending three figure sums of money on the headphones to find out that they really where no good for running in. That said they are excellent in every other aspect.

Would i be better buying an equivelent pair of clip on the ear design headphones? I would like something with a relatively good bass response, and the stock ipod ones just are not upto the job.

Any sugestions...apart form the obvious one...stop running :D

# 16 Re: Earphones for jogging - which are best?
i own the e2c's and dont like working out with them. they do pick up the sound of your foot hitting the ground, bar hitting metal, and other sound vibrations. but i do love them when im sitting in a plane or riding in a noisy bus! so, when im working out, i use koss ksc-35 sport clip-type earphones. i used a clip from my old handsfree to keep the cord outta my way while i workout. they don't look too hot but they sound decent and stay on my ears. the minuses: the padding makes my the inner ear region sweat like mad, so every so often i have to take em off to wipe away the sweat cuz it gets irritating. i like my e2c compared to that because the foamies soaked up the sweat. or maybe i just sweat alot.

the koss stays on my ears a lil too good. they took a while to loosen up but now they are great. at first the clip part would pinch my ear, but not anymore. the sound isnt as detailed as the shures but have more bass, albiet boomy bass. they snd 10x better than the stock apple earbuds that came with my mini thou. normally, i listen with my grado sr-60s. compared to those, the koss are ok.

hope that helps.

No love for the Sony MDR-A44L's?

It's a headband pair, I love them for jogging, but the right ear conked out this afternoon, and I'm now in the market for a new pair.

I'm going to check out the website for these Koss phones you all are talking about, but has anyone tried the A44L's?

Jez wondering...

havent tried the A44L's... but like that other person who posted, i also use the G74SL's when running. and i also use a sportsuit convertible on my arm so the short cord is perfect. when i'm not running (just walkin around campus or on an airplane or something), i use the EX71SL's

Oddly, I just got an email from Koss advertsing a new behind the ear banded pair called the SC14. They're only $14.99 w/ free shipping.

Anybody know of these?

I've got a pair of Sony 71's and indadvertently 2 pairs of A44L's on the way, so I'm of a mind to do some auditioning.

(And whoever recommended buy.com, thanks!)

Hi. This is my first post.

I got my 4G 20gb iPod last week for the equivalent of US$365 here in Korea. Little pricey compared to the States but well worth it. These forums have been very helpful in getting the iPod setup and working.

I'm also having the problem of finding a headphone/earphone that will stay on while jogging.

I just picked up a pair of Sony MDR-J11G hoping to solve the problem, but these as well do not stay in place and fall off after a few meters. They just hang over the ear without any holding tension.

As I am in Korea and I have not been able to find a place that sells Shure, Etymotic and Koss brand ones that some of you are recommending.

If someone knows where I can buy some here, please advise. Most Sony models seem to be readily available but not the MDR-A44L. Any suggestions to other Sony ones that would do the job would be appreciated. The EX71SL are sold here but will they stay in the ear while running?

Thanks.
