Hooking iPod into Home Stereo System(little help PLEASE)
Hello all. I have a fairly simple question I think. Basically all I want to do is hook up my iPod into my home stereo system. My Home stereo sytem has an RCA input so I'm under the impression that all I need to do is buy an RCA cable and run it from my iPod to my stereo system. Where would I run the RCA cable out of my iPod? Is this correct what I'm thinking of doing? I was also wondering if I set it up so my Ipod is plugged into the wall outlet charging and hooked up to my home stereo system if it be okay if I had the iPod charging through the wall and playing music through my home stereo system. ANY help would be appreciated. I want to make sure I do this right and not harm my iPod. Thank you all.

yeh - just buy a RCA cable and plug it into the back then to the back of the system, this is what i do. (Make sure you use dock)

Hmmm, well I actually have a 10gb model, so I don't have a dock :( but will plugging it into the wall and the stereo system still work? Oh yeah and what do you mean about plugging "it" (the RCA cable) into the "back"? The back of the stereo? or back of my iPod? In any case THANK YOU for the help.
P.S. I saw that package on apple.com, but it's a little expensive consdering Best Buy has RCA cables for 15 bucks, and I'm pretty sure an RCA cable will suffice. But thank you for the link, it's much appreciated. Any other help from anyone would also be appreciated. :)

You need 4 things:
1) a "monster" cable that has an audio out end and an RCA pair on the other.
2) a dock so you have the special outlet and the audio out outlet
3) a cable that is the special end and firewire on the other end, this plugs in to the AC adapter.
4) an AC adaptor
You probably have 3 and 4 already

Hmmm, so I do need the dock to charge while playing. I was under the impression that I could run my iPod right into the stereo through the Line Out and have my firewire plugged into my wall outlet for charging. Thank you for the info, awesome. Please keep the different solutions coming. I want as many options as possible.

technicall you could line out fron your headphone out, but the sound quality would be questionable, at best.
# 7 Re: Hooking iPod into Home Stereo System(little help PLEASE)
So basically I want a cable that can run from my iPod Line Out with RCA at the other end? Sorry, I've had my iPod for a while but this is all new to hook it up to my stereo, but it's something that really needs to be done. Really, thank you.

$15 cables... but where would you plug them into?
The suggested package for $80 gives you an AC adapter (worth $40), a dock (worth $40) , a dock-connector to firewire cable (~$20?), and the $15 Monster cables.
What iPod do you have that has line-out on the iPod? On third-generation units, there's only the headphone jack on the iPod. But the docks have a true line-out jack, it's an 1/8" stereo jack. You'd at a minimum put the iPod in the dock and run a cable from the dock's line-out jack to the stereo's RCA jacks.

Ok.
1) Buy the dock
2) Buy a Y-Cable (something like the monster cable)
Then you plug the power cable into the back of the dock.
Plug the y-cable into the line out of the dock, then then in2 the aux input of your stereo.
Stick the ipod in2 the dock, turn on your stereo and set it 2 aux, then play your ipod.
It will be charging, and playing crystal clear through the stereo.
Hope this helped!

Look for an audio in port at the back of your reciever. This could be AUX, TAPE, etc.
Usually a plug with 2 males on 1 end (larger than 3.5" jack) and aother male (3.5"jack)
Plug the 2 males into reciever, 1 male into iPod

It's pretty easy to do, and pretty much what others have said already.
On the iPod end, you need a 1/8" miniplug. On the home stereo end, you need whatever is supposed to fit into the auxiliary inputs, which are basically ANY input that you're not using now (or are willing to give up for the iPod). It doesn't even need to be labeled "Auxiliary" -- just as long as it's an analog input, it'll work fine. Most home stereos have RCA jacks for input, although there are a rare (VERY rare) few that have something else.
My setup has the dock, AC adapter, and a 1/8" miniplug-to-RCA cable. My basic Sony home theater actually has only four audio source selections -- FM and AM radios, DVD (with digital input), and "Video", which is basic RCA line level input. I've got my iPod and Nintendo plugged into my VCR/DVD combo player, believe it or not: Nintendo into Auxiliary 1, and iPod into Auxiliary 2. To listen to my iPod, I put it in the Dock, turn on the VCR thing to Aux 2, and set the home theater receiver to Video.
It's the only way I can accurately describe it, and it seems jury rigged, but it works just fine, especially with a NaviPod infrared remote.

I have read all the entries in this thread, but unfortunately this does notr help me with my stereo problem.
I have a 20GB ipod and have a dock and monster cable. I plug the RCA connectors into the phono input of my stereo.
If I plug the other end into the headphone socket of my ipod all songs have a lot of bass and the vocal is very low. The only way I can correct this is by using the vocal boost eq and then play with the bass/treble on my stereo.
If I plug the otehr end into my dock output I get a heavily distorted sound similar to a radio station as you are right at the end of it's band width, but this is extremely loud - I have to turn the volume virtually off on both the ipod and stereo.
As far as I'm aware connecting my ipod to my stereo through the dock will give better sound quality but I don't know if my set-up is incorrect or there's something wrong with my dock or cable.
Any ideas??

I have found that the following product is worth it's weight in gold:
the Send Station Pocket Dock
http://www.sendstation.com/us/products/pd_lineout.html
it come wih all the cables you'll need (except firewire to firewire, which you'll need if you want to use mains supply whilst listening to it), and is very well priced.

pdurant,
Try using a input than "phono", my old receiver had that input and never sounded right unless a turntable was plugged into it, and definately use line out and not headphone out.
The pocket dock is a nice altrernative to a second dock, if you really want a dock at your computer, but I found that my iPod lives at my stero 99% of the time and only goes to the computer once in a while for updating, so I'm not going to invest in extras that really won't see much action.
