HELP, I knocked my Macbook off the top of my bunkbed! I dont know what to do.

So last night I was watching episodes of Curb Your Enthusiasm on my laptop before I went to bed, as always. I fell asleep and accidentally knocked it off the side, crashing at least 5 feet to the hard floor.

The laptop seems ok from the outside, besides the plastic covering coming off in a few places. But when I try to turn it on, there is a flashing folder icon with a big "?" on it. The screen is all gray.

I don't know what to do... I have

- 3,000 songs
- My movies that I have made and put on YouTube
- all my school work
- 5 various seasons of shows plus a few movies
- Both albums I have created myself off of GarageBand that I have been working on for two years

If I lose all this stuff I will go insane. How do I salvage it off my hard drive? Is my MacBook repairable with this stupid flashing icon?

Also I believe I have AppleCare. What do I do with it? I know I am stupid.

THANK YOU so much everyone that helps me out... I appreciate it.

Thanks for the link, I will try to reinstall my OS... but why would it do that after an impact?

It sounds like OS X can't find the MacBook's hard disk. This could be for one of two reasons:

a) The fall destroyed the drive.
b) The fall cause the drive's connections to become unplugged.

Since the MacBook has a user-replaceable hard disk, it'd be worth taking it out and making sure all the connections are secure. Hopefully this will get it working!

AppleCare doesn't cover accidental damage, so you're out of luck on that front.

If the hard drive is stuffed, and you really want the data back - you're looking at costs in excess of $1000. Seriously.

Should've backed up! :)

Who backs up hard drives? Oh, wait a minute, I do...

Note the reinstall is going to completely erase your hard drive!

Check the connections first.

This is the first hand example of why a back up of crucial documents is so important.

A program like spinright from Steve Gibson might revive the drive if there is not terrible physical damage, but my guess is there is.
