Sad iPod Icon and cannot access other modes

I have a 20GB iPod, classic style, white. I haven't used it for a while because it kept freezing up and I didn't have a working device to connect it to my computer. I have one now but when I turn on the iPod I get the sad iPod icon, whether the ipod is connected to the computer or not. After displaying the sad iPod icon for about ten seconds the iPod shuts off.

I've tried making it go into different modes by reseting it then holding "Back" and "Select" or "Play" and "Select". Either send it to a new mode. No matter what I do the result is the same. The iPod shuts off after displaying the sad iPod for a few seconds.

I plan on bringing the iPod into an Apple Store to have it checked out. If possible I'll repair the iPod myself, unless it is cheap to have it fixed. The iPod is not under warranty.

Does anyone have any advice for me? Maybe questions I should ask when I am talking to someone at the Apple Store?

Thanks.

I just found a website that said to slam my iPod, charger input down, on a notebook and the connector to the hard drive would most likely be re-connected. It worked!

The sad iPod often indicates a hardware issues. The people with nothing to lose have found that sometimes a slam can shake it back into working order, but not always.

If you can't force the iPod into disk mode and get a full restore of the iPod, your only option is to take it into the Apple store or another repair company, for repair, or start saving for a new one if out of warranty.
