iTunes Plus songs not being deleted
When I first upgraded my iTunes song collection my old (128bitrate) songs were deleted like I requested. Now, for some reason they're sticking around and I'm not being given the option to delete them. I looked in "iTunes Help" and this is what it said
Your upgraded iTunes Plus music will replace the original purchases in your library. You will be given an option to delete the original files or move them to your desktop at time of download.
I'm not being given such an option now. Any advice? Thanks!

Unfortunately this appears to be a bug in the current version of iTunes. There isn't really any useful workaround other than to clean up the old tracks by yourself, but of course this won't help preserve things like ratings, playcounts, and the entries in your playlists themselves.
Hopefully iTunes 7.5 fixes this issue, although you might want to file a bug report with Apple at http://www.apple.com/feedback/itunesapp.html

Oh, good... I thought it was me!
Here\'s what I do - It's a pain in the a**, but it will preserve playcounts and playlists:
1) You will need to add the rating, comments and year to the new files, if necessary.
2) In the Music library, go to VIEW - SHOW DUPLICATES, and sort by track name. You should have 1 each of the M4A (Unprotected) file and the M4P (Protected) file.
3) In the iTunes list, Right click on the UNPROTECTED M4A file and choose DELETE, but make sure you do not delete the actual file - choose KEEP files when prompted.
4) Right click on the remaining protected file entry in the list, and choose "Show In Windows Explorer" (Windows - for Mac, choose the Mac equivalent).
5) You should see BOTH the M4P and M4A files in the file list. DELETE the M4P (protected) file. Make sure you delete the correct file.
6) Back in iTunes, attempt to play the remaining protected file entry - you will receive an error message that the file cannot be found, and iTunes will ask if you'd like to search for the file. Choose to search for the file.
7) Browse to where the remining unprotected m4a file resides, and choose that file and select OPEN. The new unprotected file will now be linked to the old, original entry in your library and the play count will be preserved. The new track will also still be in whatever playlists the old track was in.
If you purchase many upgraded tracks, this can be time consuming, but it's better than the laternative of playing the tracks XX amount of times to match the play count, and adding each new track to every play list.
I also save the deleted M4P Protected files.
Incidentally, I have filed a bug report.

I updated my library to iTunes Plus using iTunes 7.4 just assuming Apple would have been smart enough to replace my old files with the new ones, retaining the play counts, ratings, and playlists. I am quite bummed that it didn't, and even more so that an earlier version actually accomplished this. Does 7.5 have a function that analyzes your library for the duplicates and updates the iTunes Plus tracks with the old version's play counts and ratings?
