Loading an Ipod to Give as a Gift - Itunes Issues?
Hi - I recently bought my significant other one of the new Ipod Classics. I own a fifth generation ipod. So far, I have used my Itunes exclusively with my fifth-gen ipod. I recently upgraded to the latest version of Itunes, so I think I'm ready to hook up the Ipod Classic and load her gift with music. Before I load the Ipod with gigs and gigs of music from my Itunes library, I want to check in with this forum to ask about any potential Itunes issues that may arise from loading the Ipod on my computer and then passing it along to her for her to load more stuff on it at her leisure using her own computer with her own Itunes. (Got it? I'm about to load a second Ipod on my computer and then pass it as a gift to a new owner who'll be using Itunes on her own computer.) I expect to present her with the Ipod pre-loaded with tunes from my computer. She has her own computer, and she'll install Itunes on it. Here are my questions:
- Will I have any difficulties loading music onto a second Ipod on my computer? (I expect not, but I'm wondering if there are any issues of transferring Itunes purchased music onto a second Ipod; most of my collection consists of songs ripped from our CD's, but I have some Itunes purchases as well; I also have Audible purchases.)
- When she then hooks the Ipod up to her computer and her own Itunes (she doesn't have an Itunes account), will she have any difficulties because the Ipod came preloaded from another computer? The only problem I can forsee has to do with synching, right? She'll have to manually synch her Ipod on Itunes forever (right?) or else risk losing all the preloaded music that I put onto her Ipod.
- Any other issues you can think of? Are there any advantages to authorizing her computer to access my Itunes account? Does that let her do more things with the purchased Itunes?
Thanks!

Hasn't happened in my experience.

Yes make sure YOU put it on Manual mode before giving it to her. A solution to not having it on manual mode "forever" is she can use another program that extracts the music from the iPod to transfer onto her computer (forgot what its called but theres many) and then she can put those songs into her iTunes library and then keep it on sync.
- Any other issues you can think of? Are there any advantages to authorizing her computer to access my Itunes account? Does that let her do more things with the purchased Itunes? I think so, because I have an old account and I have a new iPod and I had to authorize it so I can watch Meet the Robinsons so I'd say just authorize her computer just in case or unless you can go back over there if she does need it authorized then I guess you can just do it then.
Sorry lmao but hope I helped some.

When you say, "make sure YOU put it on manual mode before giving it to her," you mean that I should make sure that the Itunes on her computer is set to manual, not synch, right? On my end, when I load the songs onto the Ipod on my computer before giving it to her, it doesn't matter whether I synch it with a playlist or manually load it.

But of course you use iTunes to do it.

Oh, thanks. So, using my own Itunes, I set her Ipod to manual. Then, when she connects her new Ipod to her own computer's Itunes, she doesn't need to worry about it synching over the newly loaded tracks.
Also, I can transfer Audible books to the gift Ipod without having to authorize another Ipod, right?

In situations of gifts, what you earn in "sweetness" for giving a music ready iPod, you lose in simplicity later.
You can easily load the iPod any way you wish and then put it into manual so that when she connects it to her computer the first time no worries. But if she doesn't want to use manual herself the rest of her time with the iPod, what now? She'd have to go through the process of getting the music off the iPod to the computer. There is software out there to do it, but it adds a degree of difficulty to owning the iPod.
If you want her to be able to play any of your iTunes store tracks on her computer she'll need to have it authorized with you password and username.
I'd recommend loading the iPod with some cool tunes, but also in the gift include a data CD with those songs and more. She can then pick and choose from that CD what to add to her own iTunes library, then when she gets to her own computer she can wipe the iPod and add to it whatever she wants.
But that's me.
The DRM in audible books and iTunes purchase are pretty loose when transfering to iPods, but there are a few restrictions one can run into. I believe you can only transfer audible content to limited numbers of mobile devices.
