Will only sync once, then doesnt detect Ipod
I bought my boyfriend a 3G 8GB Nano. I have a 5.5G Black 30 GB Ipod so I know how Itunes works and all that.
He has quite an old computer (3 years old) with Windows XP and he downloaded the latest version of iTunes before connecting the Ipod.
We clicked to download the latest firmware and it did. After it had downloaded it it started to install it in the Nano but it was stuck like that for more than an hour. In desperation we unplugged the USB and connected it to a different USB. It then installed the firmware but at the end it said there had been an error so it hadn't updated the firmware.
We disconnected and reconnected the Nano and it said the firmware WAS 1.0.2 but it still did the same: it would only synchronise when we plugged it in, if we wanted it to sync again the nano wouldn't display the connecting symbol on the computer and after a few minutes iTunes said error 1418, it couldn't read the disk.
We tried to restore the Ipod but we kept getting the same problem so we decided to try the Nano on my laptop.
The Nano seems to work fine on my laptop, we have been able to sync several times and it works as it should. So this means we have a problem with HIS laptop. But how can we find the solution? He can't sync his Nano to my laptop all the time and he wants to have his own library on his own laptop.
By the way, we tried unchecking 'Allow computer to turn off this devive to save battery' in USB settings as another ipod user suggested but this hasn't solved the problem.
Any ideas?

Here are two suggestions from Apple's support pages regarding the kinds of errors you're describing (assuming you're using Windows):
Update/reinstall USB drivers (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305136)
Re-register .dll files (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304996)

Thank you very much for the suggestions, we tried both methods and it still does the same. It syncs the first time when you plug the Nano in but then it doesn't do anything else. It's as if the USB turns off.

I know, thanks for your suggestions. At the moment he's using my laptop and we've created a playlist from my library just for him and his smart playlists. But it isn't ideal for him because he can't rate my songs differently (he'll mess up my library) and he needs my laptop to sync the Nano, it isn't useful at all!
He will now try and formatt the laptop and reinstall Windows and Itunes (which we had installed and uninstalled twice just in case). I'll tell you if we find out what it is.
If anyone has any ideas we haven't tried please tell us, we'll give it a go!
Thank you everyone!
