Lost my 60G IPOD in New Orleans - What do I do?

I think that it fell out of my bag in the rental car we used. I am still waiting to get a call back from the lost and found at the Thrifty rental place. In the mean time what can I do to try to get my IPOD back? Who should I call or contact? Is there anything I can do?

I am hoping that they say they have it but I have a bad feeling that the people there will jsut take it. However if they can't use it cause it is registered to me maybe they will decide to return it or something like that? Or maybe there is a way to find out if somebody is tryign to use my IPOD with my serial number... I don't know I am looking for advice.

I rented a Jeep COmpas from Thrifty at the New Orleans Airport from 10/24 to 10/25. I think that my IPod fell out and dissapeared under the passenger seat. I am not 100% sure of that but I did not take it out the rest of my stay and I had it when I got off the plane.

It is a 60G and has a hard plastic protective cover and I put a skin over the front and back that is a black and white checkered pattern that sort of looks like carbon fiber.

IF somebody finds this please contact me at Jason_Crandall@Hotmail.com

Also if you guys on the board have any suggestions please let me know what I can do to improve my chances of recoverign this IPod...

Unless they find it and return it to you there really isn't anything that you can do. Also, even if you registered your iPod that does not keep anyone else from using it. iPods exchange hands all of the time and so Apple won't do anything even if you tell them it was lost. Even if Apple was able to do anything about it, the person that ends up with your iPod would have to register it themselves which I doubt most people would do if they found or stole an iPod.

I hope you get it back.

Actually it is pretty silly that Apple does not offer some help and protection for its customers. It would be so easy for them to allow people to register a ipod and then lock that to them. If it was stolen you could call and have them lock that IPOD so if somebody else when to register it they could find out who or the location and they could also lock the ipod out of receiving any downloads via itunes.

I think the software would not be all that difficult to put together but they never will cause it is of no economic gain to them. They would rather us have to buy a new ipod.

I am hoping that the ipod fell out into the rental car and that the peopel there are honest and can find it when the rental coes back in the lot which should be sometime today. I am not counting on it but I have a little hope left.

I do think that Apple could effectively make software that does just what you are suggesting as well as make it an economical gain to them. I think the problem is that again iPods change hands all the time when people sell off their old ones and buy new ones. Also, if someone sold an iPod say on ebay they could just be mean and tell Apple that their iPod was stolen and make the new owner unable to use it. I just don't think that it is really a practical thing for Apple to do. Not to mention, if there was such a thing out there I think that if people found/stole an iPod they would just make sure they connected it to a computer without internet access so that it would not signal Apple that they have the iPod that has been reported stolen or lost.

Again, I hope you get it back.

Looks like I am not gettign it back. THey searched the rental car and did not find anyhting. So looks like somebody took it or I lost it elsewhere and just have no idea where... I am pretty sure i put it in my bag when gettign off the plane and I never set it down while on the plane...

Guess there is not much more that I can do...

As for Apple being able to help with stolen stuff- They don't need to enforce anyhitng just be able to find a user if need be...
