Apple just dropped iTunes 7.5...
And we get a new game for our ipods! haha.
Now, how about that harddrivee bug fix plz? kthxbai.
EDIT: Can a mod make that 7.5 please?
From the software update:
"iTunes 7.5 features the ability to activate iPhone wherever service is offered and support for Phase, a new interactive music game designed exclusively for iPod nano (third generation), iPod classic, and iPod (fifth generation). This release also includes bug fixes to improve stability and performance."

7.5 right? If that's what you meant I can fix the typo in your subject for you.
I'm going to do a back up and then install.

Yeah, thanks.
This might just be the first test for Time Machine, I'll find out soon enough. I remember getting screwed over on a new update before, I want to say 7.0
# 3 Re: Apple just dropped iTunes 7.5...
So is this going to take care of the battery bug for the 6th gen's?
# 4 Re: Apple just dropped iTunes 7.5...

Highly doubt it. That's an iPod update, not an iTunes update.
# 5 Re: Apple just dropped iTunes 7.5...
So far so good with 7.5 and the 160GB classic. NO freezing--I can actually make playlists now! A few very minor slowdowns, mostly when dealing with video but nothing even close to the pain we've been living with for a month. Bravo. Now one more good firmware update and we should be in business.
# 6 Re: Apple just dropped iTunes 7.5...
That's good to hear I hope that it will let me import all of my movies to my Itunes libary, and fix the podcast bug that I had. I'll post later and tell if it's any better for me.
# 7 Re: Apple just dropped iTunes 7.5...
Anybody have any thoughts on the new game yet? I'm curious to see how it turns out.
# 8 Re: Apple just dropped iTunes 7.5...
Yeahhh! The freezing issue is (at least for me) finally resolved!!! And the ridiculous waiting to just have iTunes recognize the iPod or eject the iPod also seems to be fixed. A sync that used to take at minimum 90 seconds (when only a few play counts/dates needed to be updated) or a minimum of 3 minutes (when one or more songs needed to be copied over) now takes just 5 to 10 seconds. And... no iTunes freezing while it is doing its thing!! This is a big deal for me because I sync frequently so that I can keep my 2G Nano and my 6G Classic in step on a few playlists that they share.
One interesting change that I noticed is that iTunes does not auto sync when you plug the iPod in. You have to specifically sync it. (I have mine set for 'enable disk use' and 'Sync selected playlists'). This new behavior seems to be because there is a new option to 'Disable automatic syncing for all iPhones and iPods'.
# 9 Re: Apple just dropped iTunes 7.5...
Wow! Looks as if iTunes is very usable now!!! Oh Yea!!!
# 10 Re: Apple just dropped iTunes 7.5...
what new game?

# 11 Re: Apple just dropped iTunes 7.5...
Agree how quick it is now, done adding a new cd in less than a minute instead of 5!
# 12 Re: Apple just dropped iTunes 7.5...
what new game?
I don't see any new game either.
# 13 Re: Apple just dropped iTunes 7.5...
I don't think this new game is released yet.
# 14 Re: Apple just dropped iTunes 7.5...
I didn't find the new game yet, it will probably be a free download off of the iTunes Store later down the line. I like the fact that iTunes will finally show the true bitrate for VBR encoded AAC files with the iTunes AAC encoder. The only problem is that you have to encode the files using this newer version of iTunes. Oh well, a step in the right direction.
# 15 Re: Apple just dropped iTunes 7.5...

I think that he meant "new toy" ?
# 16 Re: Apple just dropped iTunes 7.5...
Cool little feature, iTunes now shows the current battery charge of any connected iPod.
# 17 Re: Apple just dropped iTunes 7.5...
So far iTunes is running well and when my classic is connected response time is decent. Not super, but decent. I find iTunes much more usable now.
# 18 Re: Apple just dropped iTunes 7.5...

I agree! Looks quite nice. :)
# 19 Re: Apple just dropped iTunes 7.5...
So the ultimate question is there lag/freezing when syncing with a nearly full 80GB classic/160gb classic?
# 20 Re: Apple just dropped iTunes 7.5...
Phase just got posted, and its $5.
# 21 Re: Apple just dropped iTunes 7.5...
The other question is - if we pay $5 for the new game, downlaod it and play it, will it then screw up playcounts etc as other games do on the classic??
# 22 Re: Apple just dropped iTunes 7.5...
So the ultimate question is there lag/freezing when syncing with a nearly full 80GB classic/160gb classic?
Only 100Mb left of space on my 160GB Classic and its looking good - in fact the best I have seen iTunes perform in a number of ways.
1. The iPod is fast to register in iTunes on initial connection - no slower than any USB device now.
2. Under preferences you can disable automatic sync on connection, which speeds things up even more.
3. No real freezes during syncing - well maybe the odd one, but fleeting and not locking the computer up for minutes on end. CPU usage is reasonable mostly (for iTunes that is - we must always lower our expectations when dealing with this program).
4. iPod disconnects within seconds on ejecting (however the iPod itself is still unusable for a minute or so after is it disconnected from iTunes, as it is left hanging on the Ejecting - Safe to disconnect screen for ages.)
I noticed that on first connection to the new iTunes that my iPod was registered as a new USB device on my computer, so obviously something has changed with drivers or the like.
Unsolved (and I thought it would be an iTunes issue) are the photos not displaying properly, or the missing icons from games (trivial I know!).
So overall a vastly improved performance - my classic is usable now - and in fact is probably better in its interaction with iTunes than the 5.5G iPod ever was. So what will iTunes 1.6 next week bring?

# 23 Re: Apple just dropped iTunes 7.5...
Yep, the continual minute-long freezes have gone. There are now 3-4 second freezes at the same point but it's much more usable. A couple more tweaks should eradicate the problem completely.
I'd say that the Classic was now a viable product.

That almost makes me want to tick 'yes' to their little message I usually click 'no' to for about 2 - 3 weeks until everyone has been the little guinea pigs in the latest iTunes experiment. :D

I'm actually going to go for it tomorrow Stu. I need to back up first, but I've thought about it, and all reports seem like it's been better for all, so I'm looking forward to the true bitrate being displayed. Then you won't see me for days ... while I rip a few things. :D

Thank you Jesus... I can actually add a new album to my ipod without waiting 5 minutes.

# 28 Re: Apple just dropped iTunes 7.5...
I'm glad to see everyone else is happy with the update. It's been nothing but trouble for me so far.
After installing 7.5 last night, I plugged in my old Video 60 for a routine sync - one that would have taken a couple minutes with 7.4. iTunes froze up more completely than I've ever seen it do. (It would respond to the occasional mouse movement or click, but those responses were few and far between.) And it did not indicate that it was actually doing anything. After about 20 minutes, I unplugged the iPod and re-booted the computer.
I tried again and it did the same thing. (I used Task Manager to close iTunes after about 10 minutes this time.) Then I thought maybe it's actually doing something, so I decided to plug the 60 in again and leave it alone. At somewhere around 20-30 minutes, it sprang to life, did its quick sync, and it was finished. I'm hopin gthe lang delay was a one time thing.
So expecting something weird like that, I plugged in my Classic 160 and waited. It froze for a long time and took somewhere around 20 minutes to sync - something that would have taken about 5 minutes with all the freezing in 7.4.
When I plugged in my 160 this morning, it told me I need to set up my new iPod. I clicked ok (the only option), and it gave me an error -48 and said the iPod couldn't be synced. In the background, while it's displaying this message, I could see that it was syncing, displaying all the files as they sync. It popped up that error about 5 more times over the next few minutes, until it finished. It updated the files I wanted it to, but it did not sync play counts for anything played today, and it deleted about 20 GB of TV shows and other videos. I'm in the process of putting those videos back on right now, and iTunes is very unresponsive, but it is syncing.
So far for me, the freezing is worse than ever. I hope after the current sync, it will stabilize, but it's been the worst update ever so far. I hope I'm the only one...

People have noted that on initial connection there is installation of some drivers for the newer iPods, it might explain the first lag, but I haven't heard anyone else report this yet. What kind of internet connection do you have?
# 30 Re: Apple just dropped iTunes 7.5...
Itunes 7.5 still doesn't let me import all of my movies to my Itunes Libray I have 49 videos and my Itunes Library only has 32 videos. Also there still is a 30 sec lag when ever I add a podcast that I want to dl when there are some that are already going. I'm going to put my pictures back on my Ipod and see if they work now.

The computer didn't say it was installing new drivers, although it may have been doing just that. My Internet connection is Comcast high speed cable, so I'm sure that's not an issue.
The weird part is that the first sync (last night) was fine, other than the very long delay. It's today that iTunes keeps telling me to set up my iPod. When I click on "Done" (it's either that or cancel and don't connect), it immediately deletes all the TV show episodes I've already watched (because it reset the preference to only sync unwatched ones). And it keeps giving me that error -48 and saying it can't sync (while it is syncing).
I got all my videos restored a couple hours ago. I just plugged in the iPod to see what would happen. It should have just updated a couple play counts, but instead, it went through the whole setup - error - delete watched TV shows cycle. I'm currently restoring the 94 TV shows it just deleted. It's almost 20 GB and takes the better part of an hour to restore. I can't go through this every time. Why can't iTunes recognize my iPod and it's preferences any more? Especially when it was fine last night (the first time I synced with the new version).
It's at times like these that I have to remind myself that the iPod is the coolest invention in the history of mankind, and that it's worth the trouble...

That option is under Prefernces / Syncing.
# 34 Re: Apple just dropped iTunes 7.5...
Oh sweet jesus now I can go out and finally get a classic that works.
# 35 Re: Apple just dropped iTunes 7.5...

Thank you. I don't know why I kept skipping that tab. I guess I figured it was just for the iPhone.
# 36 Re: Apple just dropped iTunes 7.5...
As noted in the iLounge feature, iTunes now supports Events (from iPhoto 08) syncing. This is a GREAT feature I commented that I wanted when iLife 08 came out...
Basicly, all your photos are organized into events, but before yesterday, to get them to sync as seperate, you'd have to make each Event an Album, which was done. Fixed, thankfully.
# 37 Re: Apple just dropped iTunes 7.5...

That's nice - however - I think it would be much more useful if the iPod would support tags (as available in Adobe and many other imaging programs...)
# 38 Re: Apple just dropped iTunes 7.5...
Yay! My freezing issues are gone :D
Thank you Apple! Bout frickin time!
# 39 Re: Apple just dropped iTunes 7.5...
Wow iTunes is much faster than its been in the past..even with the 5th gen.
# 40 Re: Apple just dropped iTunes 7.5...
let's hope it stays that way.
# 41 Re: Apple just dropped iTunes 7.5...
I'm still gonna wait a few weeks till I update. Last time I updated (from iTunes 6 to 7) the bug where youre whole libarary is deleted randomly appeared and I wasnt happy. It hasnt happened lately tho.
# 42 Re: Apple just dropped iTunes 7.5...
so is the classic's buggy problems over?
# 43 Re: Apple just dropped iTunes 7.5...

The only thing fixed is the freezing with iTunes problems - every other bug is intact.

# 44 Re: Apple just dropped iTunes 7.5...
Upgraded to 7.5 and find syncing my 5.5 Video ipod is faster. No problems here, but apart from the true bit rate, not much else seems to have changed.
Question, do they upgrade their AAC Encoder in newer versions of iTunes?
# 45 Re: Apple just dropped iTunes 7.5...
Apple doesn't always update their AAC encoder with newer releases of iTunes/QuickTime. A bunch of the updates are simple patch jobs to fix any bugs. There appears to be a newer version of the AAC encoder though as you can rip a song with iTunes 7.3 and it will have a different file size than iTunes 7.5. I don't know if the quality improved but the encoder has been updated. The encoder updates actually come from QuickTime updates as iTunes is nothing more than a graphical front-end for QuickTime. iTunes uses QuickTime for everything from playing videos, audio, encoding videos, encoding audio, etc. There is normally a new AAC encoder anytime Apple updates QuickTime to a whole new version (like the transition from QuickTime 6 to QuickTime 7). The smaller updates are hard to tell and you have to encode a file with the older version and newer version to see if it has any affect.
# 46 Re: Apple just dropped iTunes 7.5...
Earlier, I reported the problems I was having with the new iTunes 7.5. Every time I plugged in my Classic 160, it treated it as a new iPod. I had to reset all of my iPod preferences every time I plugged it in too. I could get ti to sync, but it would not transfer any play count or rating change info. And if I wasn't careful to change the preferences before syncing, it would delete my movies and TV shows.
Seeing that nobody here had similar issues, I figured it must have been something unique to my unit. I was about to do a full restore, which I was dreading because it was going to take about 5 hours to reload my 130 GB library onto the iPod.
Then I figured if I was going to restore anyway, I might as well poke around and see what I could find. I snooped around the hidden folders on the iPod, and found a suspicious file called iTunesprefs. I found it suspicious because its date and time stamp was from the first time I plugged the Classic in after upgrading to 7.5, and I've been updating my preferences every time I plug it in. And it's my iTunes preferences that keep reverting to the default ones everytime I plug it in. I figured maybe the file is corrupt, and it seemed it would be the kind of thing that would be re-created if it were missing. So I deleted it. I figured I was going to restore it anyway, so why not try.
I plugged the iPod in, and it showed right up in iTunes without the annoying setup screen and "unknown error -48" screens I'd been getting. I still had the hidden iPod folder open in windows, and sure enough, a shiny new iTunesprefs file appeared. I adjusted the preferences the way I wanted them and ejected the iPod. I played a song and plugged it in. It immediately updated the play count for the song. (I did lose all play counts from the past 3 days, but I'll survive that.) I checked the preferences and they were all just as I had set them. And all without the freezing issues of previous iTunes versions.
I'm so happy iTunes works the way it should now. Now we just need firmware 1.0.3...
# 47 Re: Apple just dropped iTunes 7.5...
The corrupt preferences files strike again. Interesting find.
Good Job.
# 48 Re: Apple just dropped iTunes 7.5...
I've got an almost completely full 80gb Classic, and although I wasn't having most of the problems many have reported here, I found that manual syncing (which is all I do) was tedious because of frequent pauses. It's much better now - pauses are only a few seconds rather than tens of seconds. Quitting is instant, too.
# 49 Re: Apple just dropped iTunes 7.5...
The corrupt preferences files strike again. Interesting find. But not the silver bullet I was hoping for, at least not in my case. Picked up a brand new 160GB Classic over the weekend and experienced the same "Register your iPod" endless loop. I'd register the iPod, set all my sync preferences, let it sync, eject the iPod, then when I'd connect to re-sync later I'd be prompted to register all over again. After about 5 registrations (apparently successful) I gave up and selected "Never Register", but registered manually through Apple:
https://register.apple.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/GlobaliReg.woa (https://register.apple.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/GlobaliReg.woa)
So far so good, seems to sync just fine and no more registration prompts.
