Universal Dock sound problem

I have a universal dock which I bought a few years back for my 40GB ipod. I now have a classic and dropped the adaptor in but no sound comes out. So I dropped the old 40GB ipod in and it works fine!
Any ideas please :confused: I hope my classic is not faulty :(

Can someone just let me know if their classic works with their old universal dock or not?

I bought a second-hand dock off ebay and it works fine with my classic
