Question for Those Whove got Battery Life Issues
Just the other day I started to have a massive battery drain issue that others are experiencing. I started going through a mental checklist of what I may be doing differently now. The one thing that came to mind is using the hold button. My question for those of you who have battery drain issues is: Do you use the hold button too?
It would be interesting if there's a direct correlation between the two.

Seems to be related to firmware 1.02..the unit just won't spin down the hard drive and therefore your battery drains fast.

Yeah, thanks for bother to even read and answer the question.

It only happened to me once, but I did nothing unusual. I selected an album in coverflow and started playing it. (The iPod was fully charged.) After a few songs, I turned it off and went to sleep. (I've done this exact thing about 20 times before (and since) with my new Classic 160 without incident.) When I wore up, the battery was dead. I did not use the hold button.
Maybe it's what we're listening to or some other overlooked detail. I was listening to an old Gordon Lightfoot album from 1973 called Sundown, and it was set to shuffle the songs but not to repeat. Screen brightness was set to 0% and backlight timer was on 30-seconds (which is really 20). Volume was around 60-70%. The iPod was set face up on the nightsatnd with a set of Bose headphones plugged into it. Altitude was about 2230 feet above sea level. That's about all the details I can remember.

i never use the hold button but it happens to me a lot. my classic was fully drained in a span of 5 days after listening to 5 songs then turning it off.
i'm tired of waiting for a new firmware to solve this problem. i want to use this classic like my 2G nano and not worry about it having no power next time i use it. yesterday i turned off the album art option in itunes to check if that will solve it. i'll see how it goes and report back.

I dont use the hold button either, my 2 drains have happened whist using cover flow, its been 2 weeks now I have stayed away from that option and no drain

It happened again last night. The iPod was fully charged. I selected an album from coverflow, then a starting song. Then I paused it immediately, intending to listen later in bed. I ended up not turning it back on, but the battery was dead in the morning.
Just wondering - does this ever happen during daylight hours? It always seems to be overnight.

Yes, it is definitely related to the built in light sensor. ;)
Seriously though, I am confident that it is not related to firmware 1.02. I've had this twice now. After the first time I reset the device and went back to 1.01. Well, I had it again a few days ago. So, not firmware related.
I am fairly confident that it isn't coverflow either. I rarely use that and I'm pretty sure I didn't use it the times my battery drained. I have tried to get into the habit of putting the iPod up to my ear after shutting it down. There have been several times after shutting it down that I have heard the hd still running. I turn it on then back off again until it is silent. I obviously forgot to do that the other night when it drained again.
This is my first Apple device and I bought it because of their reputation. What a joke. This sucks and Apple hasn't even acknowledged that there is a problem yet.

Okay I don't know for sure but I don't think that the hold button would run the battery down, I actually think that it will help it because the hold button makes it so you don't hit a button and the black light goes on. Anyways here are some tips for you to conserve battery 1. Charge the battery and don't listen to it when you first get the iPod. 2. Turn the back light timer to 2 seconds. 3. Turn off EQ. 4. Turn down the brightness. 5. Don't use shuffle as much. I use all of those tips and I can go for a week straight without having to charge it.
# 9 Re: Question for Those Whove got Battery Life Issues
It happened to me just once. I hooked it up to my car, fully charged, and by the time I had gone to school and back (roughly 45 minutes) it was already down to 1/4. I had it on hold the entire time.
I doubt it had anything to do with the hold, as whenever I set it to play a album or playlist I'll turn on the hold and it usually doesn't die that quickly.

Ok, I don't know if you've read up on the many reports of people having this issue with 1.0.1 on apple forums AND on this forum but for the last time it is not 1.0.2 that's doing this... It's been out since the release and has not been fixed yet...
Same with it being cover flow... Those two things are NOT the factors in this issue, it's purely random...
For the OP, I've gotten this battery drain issue doing absolutely nothing except turning it on, and browsing the menus, then turning it back off... If you can get the HDD spinning enough, and all of a sudden power it down, the HDD will continue to spin... Cover flow is just a very sure fire way to get the HDD to spin real fast...
I've had it happen with hold and no hold, music and no music... It's totally dependent on HDD usage...
