Even Worth It?

Im Thinking about getting the 160, but with all the talk about the bugs and problems with it that i seem to read, is it even worth getting one before apple fixes these problems? Are these ipods all lemons er what?

Not all of them are lemons, but a significant number of people appear to have issues. Some people suggest the larger your music collection with a 160 the more likely you are to have freezing issues, etc.

It makes sense that a larger library would cause more problems, on a hardware side... not entirely sure about software.

I personally couldn't tolerate the Classic, I took it back and got a 5G again at 50% less capacity and 50% less battery..that should tell you something.

Until the bugs are worked out I don't recommend it, but you could always give it a try and see if you can tolerate it and then you can always take it back if it doesn't work out.

I love my 160GB Classic. It is the best iPod I have ever owned! I say get one from a store such as BestBuy or CircuitCity where you can return it for no charge if you decide you don't like it. I can't put my Classic down!

I with those two. The few bugs that the Classic has won't stay for long; Apple will fix them! Loving my Classic :)

I have got a 160GB and haven't had any issues. I would recommend it.

Me too. There are a couple really annoying serious bugs, but I trust Apple to fix them. There are a bunch of minor bugs that I don't care if they fix or not. Overall, I love my Classic 160. :D

so if i am to go and buy the 160 gb today for example, are all the bugs with it to be resolved by maybe downloading a new itunes when it is produced and released or are the bugs only going to be resolved once i go and get a new 160 in a month when apple has made the new "bug free batch" of ipods?

The catch is that your month is probably more than generous. In just a few days short of two months since they shipped they've only managed to fix or partially fix a very few of the numerous issues people are experiencing.

If you don't use playlists much, particularly smartlists, don't use any sort of car interface or specialised dock device, don't use ratings, and don't mind that sometimes for no reason at all your iPod's hard drive may spin and spin until the battery is shot, you will probably be happy with them as they currently exist. If any of those issues are deal breakers, you'd be better off staying away for now as when or even if they get fixed is nothing I'd bet on.

Also don't use your ipod for photos because not all will display, or sync it much because it will repeatedly freeze your computer and take forever.

I always like the faith in that things will be solved by Apple. Some things in the past have never been solved, for example the iPod photo's sound issues (admittedly probably hardware based) were resolutely ignored by Apple. iTunes sluggish and resource hogging handling of big libraries just gets worse and worse, and I suspect this is part of the Classic's problems, which may not be at all easily solvable. Even though its interaction with the Classic has added extra layers of abysmal on the already bad, even if these new undesirables are solved iTunes will never be a good program as currently written.

I agree with the positive people in his thread. I have owned a silver 80GB iPod classic for over a month now and I love it. I've had no problems what-so-ever and don't even notice any minor, or major, bugs that other people state.

Even if there are bugs, Apple will eventually fix them. So baiscally I'm saying I recommend you should buy the classic straight away :)

Agreed, I'm starting to question weither the iPod Classic's Hardware is even suitable to hold so much data since there definitely seems to be a relation between how much you fill your iPod and how much it lags/freezes with iTunes.

No doubt! I waited two weeks after their release before I ordered a 160GB. A few days before I ordered, I came here to read up about it. If I had listened to the people who had problems with theirs and not bought one, I would have been very upset knowing the one I could have got worked great. I made the same mistake in coming here when I bought my first 30GB iPod Photo. People were coming here because they had some problems with theirs. I still went out and bought one and was very happy with it. It still works and hold a battery charge for a long time. Same with my iPhone, same story. I'm glad I bought my iPhone.

Go ahead buy one, chances are you will be fine!

I'd say its a toss-up at this point. You COULD get a Classic with less or no bugs, but theres also a VERY high chance you could get one with some or ALL the bugs people are describing and complaining about.

Also, theres a high chance Apple will not fix these issues in a timely manner, since they ARE ignoring and deleting user complaints from their own forums.

I wouldnt risk it if I were you, but thats only because I always tend to err on the side of caution when so much money and trouble is at stake. You have the final word and let me just say, may the gods be on your side if you decide to plunk down your hard earned cash for a Classic, youll need all the help you can get.

Apple as already acknowledged that some of the bugs will the new Classic iPods will be addressed in next week's update of iTunes, v7.5. Maybe that will solve the "crash on update" problems we've been seeing.

If they could just fix this and the "random pause while docked" issue, I'd be satisfied. The 160G for me has been fine, and the extra capacity made it worth living with these other annoyances so far.

I have a 160GB Classic and am happy I replaced my 80GB 5.5. The only downside is the delay when going through the menus. When I first bought it, I was thinking the delay would drive me nuts. After a short while, I have gotten used to the delay and while it is better when faster, the other features make up for it in my case.

My favorite updates? The use of folders in the playlists and the ability to control shuffle in the song menu where it is easy to get to.

The Classic is an evolution, not revolution in the iPod and the features I love could have been included in an update to the 5.5...

this is my only comlplaint too...it's not bad...but it could be faster...

is this an issue that could possibly be fixed with software updates too?

Go ahead buy one, chances are you will be fine!I appreciate that there are people happy enough with the 3G nanos and classics as is, but it is not a "chances are" issue - it's a "what do you want your iPod for" issue. I can say without any doubt that 100% of the classics would be completely unusable, not just annoying, unusable for me; so Apple gets no money until they fix it properly. Stop with this irresponsible, smiley faced head in the sand garbage: people need to know that there are real bugs that ALL of them are affected by and if you use any of the features those bugs affect you need to stay away. If you don't use any of the 100% suffering from bugs, fine, go ahead and buy, "chances are" you will be fine, but if you use any of those features, you will 100% guaranteed not be fine because they are currently broken.

Why should I stop? I am positive that not everyone will experience these bugs like you do. Stop telling me and other people who are NOT having any problems with their iPods to stop telling people that they may not have any problems with theirs.

It is TRUE that I am not having any problems with mine.

NO syncing issues
No iTunes freze ups
NO playlist syncing issues
my iPod works perfectly.

Stop telling me what I can recommend others do here. It's true they probably won't have any problems. Get lost.

Can anyone confirm if the bug with smart playlists not doing live updating also exists in the classic? That is ultimately what the dealbreaker will be for me.
