Skateboarders, please educate me

Well, Christmas is coming, and my son wants a skateboard. The problem is I have no clue what to get him. He's 10 and this will be his first. I started searching the web and still feel no more educated, so I'm calling out to the iPod toting skateboardes for advice. What are good manufacturers? What will hold up? Any good on-line shops?

Thanks :)

CCS.com is the place to go for skate gear.

As for the actual gear, I personally prefer Element boards, but, go with the graphic your son likes best. They're all manufactured essentially the same way.

For the actual hardware, Independent Trucks tend to be the most durable, Bones bearings are the only way to go (Get the Bones Reds. For a first deck, they're perfect. You can always upgrade to the Swiss or the Ceramics later. Dropping $120 on bearings for a first board is silly), and get bigger wheels, around 54-58mm. Those will roll over cracks a lot easier and be much more pleasant to ride on concrete with. Any brand is good for wheels, and the generic CCS wheels are really good for what they are: wheels. As for griptape and bolts/risers, get the cheapest ones. That's the one area that price does not mean better at all.

Hope that helps.

That's a great start thanks. Unfortunately, all the shops in my area seem to be gearing up for snowboarding, so the pickings seem to be getting slim. You would think the skating kids still would want stuff for Christmas...............

I think there's still one more place to go. Wish me luck.

The fact that you took the time to find the umlauted 'u' impresses me beyond measure. Well done, Freddy, well done.

Yeah ccs is good. Also, if you are looking for a 10 year old appropriate board in terms of graphics, I have not seen one bad element board. Also, try to find a board that is smaller, element makes a section of mini boards called "twigs" They're smaller and will be maneuverable for your son. Anything over 31" is too big for a 10 year old, try around 28 if he is really small, and 29 or 30 if he is average. Any board that is this size is called a "mini" so if there is a sort by option on ccs make sure you check off mini. Stay away from blind and world industries too, horrible quality and I don't even know if they still exist.

If you're trying to stay away from higher priced boards, you could always go to ####s sporting goods.

wow I cant believe they censored that. I think you know what Im talking about tho.

I also have to disagree with FreddyRamone on the wheel part. Try ricta's they are cool and I love using them.

dont listen to these guys. ive read that only 10% of kids pursue skateboarding after the first 2 weeks, so dont assume hes going to like it for too long. i myself skateboard, but almost all my friends quit after about a week, trying to learn an ollie (jumping) on there skateboards. you can actually get some pretty nice ones for cheap on ebay, i got an enjoi board (popular brand name) very durable, wheels, trucks, bearings, everything included, brand new, for 50$. dont waste too much money on you kid now, you will thank me later....

edit-oh and, is a very simple alt code... alt+127. im an alt finatic lol, ive learned almost every code there is...

I know that, but I don't know the code itself, and assuming Freddy didn't either he actually looked it up. But he might have known it.

Wow, you're a pompous ###.

First off, yeah, I have the codes memorized, but alt+127 doesn't do anything for me seeing as I'm on a Mac. ( is option+u and then u)

Second, to simply come in and blow up about how everyone else is wrong on this thread is a pretty bold thing to do.

If a kid is really interested in skateboarding, then they're gonna know if mom or dad went to Wal-Mart and grabbed a $30 skateboard vs. putting one together.

I mean, even if you cheap out on hardware and get a sweet deck, that's going to make it a million times better for the kid, because that graphic is a big deal to a beginning skater. If you have a sweet board, it makes a big difference to the kid.

Besides, isn't the point of christmas presents to make the kid happy?

And Hyroboarder, I do agree about the wheels. I personally use Flip Sidecuts. The CCS generic wheels are fine for starter wheels, but when you get more serious, Rictas or Autobahns are the way to go, especially since Sidecuts are hard to find anymore.

I didn't know where you got your graphics from untill my son told me he wanted a skateboard.

I am going to build him a board, or I should say have one built for him. I'll learn the mechanical end for future boards. I'm going to get him a "twig", and most likely use Independent Trucks. Wheels and bearing I'm not sold on yet. But I'll most likely spend a couple extra bucks on Element grip tape, for the sake of graphics.

All your input is appreciated.:)

another thing is if you send away for a ccs catalogue they always have a free shipping on orders over 90$ and sometimes if you're lucky it'll be over 30$. Looking at my ccs mag right now I can see a cool looking element twig quadrant deck.

One more thing is that most if not all components from ccs will surely be able to stand up to a 10 year old. I wouldn't get too worked up about how durable something is, especially if you have to pay extra for it. That money could be used for safety equipment if you don't have it.

I suggest spending the $15 for Bones Red bearings. Those will last a reaaaaally long time. Bones bearings are the best in the industry.

You guys are all preaching CCS to buy from, but what about Skateboard Warehouse? The reason being:

At CCS you can get a "Quadrant" twig deck, with CCS Trucks, CCS wheels, and Bones Reds bearings for $112.99.

At Skateboard Warehouse you can get a ""Rasta Seal" twig deck, with Independent Trucks, Element wheels (I couldn't find blanks), and Bones Reds bearings for $112.99. The exact same price.

I believe both include assembly and shipping. So what do you guys think?

Also, the "quadrent" is a thriftwood, and the "rasta seal" is a featherweight. Is lighter always better, or are there downfalls to that too?

I only preach CCS from experience.

I've heard nothing either way about Skateboard Warehouse, so I can't say anything, but if you get a better deal there, then it's worth a shot.

Just let us know how it goes so maybe we can get a better deal in the future.

The only downfall to light decks is obviously they're not as strong. So again if your kid is heavier than most (I think the mini max weight is around 100 lbs) I would stay away.
http://shop.ccs.com/kitBuilder.do?kitTemplateKey=CUSTOM_COMPLETE

This link is your rasta deck along with bones red bearings (which Freddy Ramone recommended and I do too) Ricta wheels which are excellent, independent trucks. Don't worry about the nuts and bolts too much.

hey if the kid takes up skateboarding isn't pot included in the description? ;)

but seriously, whoever is offering a kid a joint will offer every other kid a joint around there, I don't the older kid will think that an 11 year old smokes pot just because his colors are also the jamaican flag colors.

Rasta is actually a religion, and here's an excerpt from Wikipedia: "For many Rastas, smoking cannabis (known as ganja, marijuana, herb, kali, "trees", "bud", or lamb's bread) is a spiritual act, often accompanied by Bible study; they consider it a sacrament that cleans the body and mind, heals the soul, exalts the consciousness, facilitates peacefulness, brings pleasure, and brings them closer to Jah. The burning of the herb is often said to be essential "for it will sting in the hearts of those that promote and perform evil and wrongs." Many believe that cannabis originated in Africa, and that it is a part of their African culture that they are reclaiming. It is sometimes also referred to as "the healing of the nation", a phraseology adapted from Revelation 22:2."

So yeah, they smoke pot, but it's not like they go get wasted for the heck of it. Catholic masses drink wine, am I right? And also, Rasta isn't only about smoking pot. I think you're the one who needs to "realize" something in this case.

Finally, jwc is a man, not a woman.

And hydroboarder, just so I can be an equal-opportunity hater, the colors come from the Ethiopian flag, not Jamaica's. :p

hey i dont smoke, smoking is for deadbeat losers who have no lives and think that getting a high will somehow make things better for them and that just makes them more idiotic and stupid that they keep on smoking it and they waste thousands of dollars on what could have been a new car that couldve gotten you a girlfriend and then not be single at this very moment addicted to pot with no kids looking at porno all day long.

sorry for the run-on sentence...
