iTunes cant communicate with iPod

I tried to start up iTunes this morning and got the little pop up that says "iTunes might be unable to communicate with iPod"
I have done what it suggested with the .dll files. I rebooted and restarted iTunes and STILL got the same pop up. Can anyone suggested a work around or if not a good 3rd party piece of software I can use to load my iPod.

Different USB port
Different cable

Make sure you are not charging a 2nd gen shuffle at the same time (personal experience)

Uninstall/Reinstall http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93976 don't skip the clean up the installers steps.

I don't have anything other than my 160GB Classic. I think I'm going to dump iTunes it's a pile of garbage. I'll have to hunt for something better.
plus it wasn;t the iPod that was causing the pop up. it happened when I opened iTunes to add some more music.
