iTune Questions for Newbies
Does anyone know what the little checkboxes in the name column are used for? And why are they all checked by default?
Thanks in advance for helping me!

The check marks can be used to filter certain songs out of smart playlists (i.e. "select only checked items" as an additional criteria) and you can filter out unchecked songs from your iPod if desired. The check marks also can be used to filter what is/ what is not played in iTunes (unchecked songs will play only if you manually select them -- they'll be skipped over otherwise).

(I'm assuming the question is from an iTunes newbie, not intended to be answered by an iTunes noob ;-)
If a box is unchecked, iTunes will skip that track as it plays through a list. (It'll still play if double-clicked.) You can also use the checkboxes as a refinement in smart playlists ("Match only checked items").
Kind of a holdover from iTunes' early days when it was just a player for Macs; smart playlists can now do all the work of the checkboxes and more.
