Pondering Wether or Not to Get a Touch

Hey guys, I just registered as you could have figured. I've had an iPod before (1st Generation Mini), but I lost it on a flight to Italy, so I'm looking for a new one. I saw the touch today at Valley Fair mall, and I fell in love with it right away. I love all of it's features, and the touch screen is awesome. I even thought it was an iPhone at first! So I'm saving up for one, but I'm only 13, so 300 bucks is a pretty big stretch for me. I'd be more than happy to sell some of my games that I don't play anymore, but that definately won't be enough. So can you guys help me decide if I should get it? What are problems with it? What's nice about it (Having built in iTunes WiFi is awesome. What are the other features)?

Sooo, thanks!

Hi and welcome, there is a lot of stuff here about the touch problems and features. basically the good, the bad, and the ugly, best thing to do is read the posts here and get the info you are looking for.

I'd wait for the 32 GB release. That's what I'm doing, due to the fact the touches are brand new, and many problems still exist. If you want to LIGHTLY suffer through them, which there are few, and you don't mind the 8 or 16 GB capacities, get it.

i thought like that too, but i couldn't fathom waiting so long for the next ipod update. (probably 9 months or so)

i figured that before the new ipods get announced (just keep up with tech sites), i would sell my touch and then get the new one with that money + lil more.

I too thought about waiting for a 32GB or higher capacity touch (which may or may not be released next year, about 9-11 months from now) but then I went to Best Buy and experienced a iPod touch for myself and thought it was a real innovation. I hate to say it but I wouldn't really trust the review of the iPod touch here on iLounge. They seemed to have a negative mentality going right into the review. That review had "it's not an iPhone so meh" written all over it.

So I purchased a 16GB iPod touch and it is able to carry around enough music for me. I can fit a 8GB playlist on it (which is about 2.5 days of pure audio listening) along with one movie, a couple of music videos, and a couple of TV shows. It most definitely doesn't hold my entire library but I knew that going in. If you are in need of a iPod now and like the features then I say go with the iPod touch. Most of the problems with the iPod touch seem to be hardware related and hammered out by Apple. They had some screen issues with not correctly displaying black and those are now fixed (for the most part, every once in a while a bad screen will slip by). There really aren't that many software issues with the iPod touch though, it is definitely less than the iPod classic.

So it is all up to you. I currently have a good job and I will have an even better job by next year so I know that I can afford a new iPod once every year. My decision to get a iPod touch this year had a lot to do with my current and future financial situations. You, on the other hand, are in a different boat which is perfectly fine. You have to make the choice of getting a iPod touch now and dealing with the 16GB capacity (which is more than enough for me to put a best of playlist out of my big library) or wait the 9-11 month for a higher capacity touch. Either way, all of the iPod touch software problems should be hammered out with firmware updates over the next couple of months.

I came from a 2G iPod with 40GB storage. Now I'm with the Touch 16GB. Does this cause me a problem to have "only" 16GB ? Not a single moment - I just make a selective sync instead of syncing everything.
I've been several times on holidays with my old ipod, to realize that even if I had my whole collection with me, I would never listen to that much music, and ususally focus on albums of all times which I do like, as well as new acquisitions or downloads. So not at one moment 16GB is an issue.
And I agree with kornchild2002 : the Touch has a novelty factor I can't resist to. That's the kind of interface I've been waiting for quite a time...

Well, since I can only afford the 8GB, does that have enough storage for me? I have about 600 songs, but only 150 that I will really put on...Also, I might put a few South Parks on it.

apple says so:

8GB Up to 1,750 songs, up to 10,000 photos, up to 10 hours of video, or some of each.

this of course can vary depending how how it all encoded and stuff.

8gb should be enough memory for you. I have a 16gb iPod touch and I love it! I suggest getting one since there is no need for you to wait for a higher capacity one. I got the warranty with mine just in case but so far no problems! Good luck!

Check see if apple.com have refurbs. Good deal if they have them.

Why would a refurb BE a refurb? Major problems, or just used?
Major Manson at 2007-11-15 12:58:53 >
# 13 Re: Pondering Wether or Not to Get a Touch
refurb are usually ipods that people send back to apple with defects in which they fix so it is in almost factory new condition. it will be used but will act like a new ipod.

I don't know if I would trust a refurbed iPod touch. Theoretically speaking, they go through the same standards check that the factory fresh units do. However, I think the iPod touch has a lot more hardware packed into it thus meaning you could have more problems with a refurb unit. I don't know, I have never trusted refurbished units and I don't think I ever will. That little voice in the back of my head tells me that there was something wrong with the products originally so that problem could get carried over.

I also never mess with refurbs. Just the idea of getting a used device bothers me. I would rather spend the extra money and get one new.
