Help With Wifi!
Okay, got the new iPod Touch. Wifi isn't working at all. I'm at the same rang from the router as my laptop is, and my laptop is just fine. it finds my network and connects to it. the little thing that tells you how much bars you have is full. but when i go to safari it says "safari can't open the page because it can't find the server"; youtube says "cannot connect to youtube" and itunes says "cannot connect to itunes store." can someone please help me set this up!?!?!
# 1 Re: Help With Wifi!
make sure you have put correct password/key in.
dont forget to use caps it you have to. Apparently it can still show status as connected even if you put a wrong passkey in.
# 2 Re: Help With Wifi!
I'm using a wifi connection that isn't password protected, i live out in the way country so i dont worry about people stealing my connection.
# 3 Re: Help With Wifi!
hmmm..
when my wifi was playing up, i did settings reset and it fixed it.
try that perhaps?
Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will suggest something shortly..
# 4 Re: Help With Wifi!
ugh, that still didn't work. i went to reset netowrk settings, it restarted, and it does the same thing.
# 5 Re: Help With Wifi!
Is there a lock image next to your connection? Did you have to type the wep key off of your router into your Touch?
# 6 Re: Help With Wifi!
I think I read on this forum where someone had the same problems but updated the firmware on their routter and was able to get a better connection to their ipod touch.
# 7 Re: Help With Wifi!
nope, no lock image and didn't need to type in a wep key. my frame wire is up to date, but i'll try to reset the router.
# 8 Re: Help With Wifi!
Change different security. My Macbook didn't work when I used WEP but WPA worked fine.

nu uh... changed it to wpa, still not working. except this time it dosn't ask for the key. whats with that? my laptop asked for it, but not the iTouch.
# 10 Re: Help With Wifi!
Try a different channel, channel 11.
# 11 Re: Help With Wifi!
how about some other wifi hotspots? like Starbucks? does it work there?
at least you can find out if its the Touch or your router that is the problem.
# 12 Re: Help With Wifi!
have you register your itouch? if you haven't you have to register your itouch first on itunes before you can use the wifi
# 13 Re: Help With Wifi!
I'll try chaning the the channel. I also have to stop by target later on after class, starbucks is right next to it, so if the channel dosn't work, i'll see if it works at starbucks. ANd yes, i already registerd it.
# 14 Re: Help With Wifi!
If you are using a non apple modem/router then you have to put a $ (dollar sign) before your wep password... ie $cep34g67, this dollar sign is a sort of apple code to tell the touch that you are using another brand name. Stupid but try it and your wifi will work.
# 15 Re: Help With Wifi!
okay, i tried the dollar sign thing and it still didn't work. I took my ipod to school and was able to connect it there. i then took it to best buy, which they were no help, and was able to connect it there. therefore it has to be my router... can someone with a working ipod touch that is working properly tell me what settings to set my linksys router to? thanks.
# 16 Re: Help With Wifi!
just a shot in the dark here...but if the touch has a mac address (don't know), make sure you have it listed as an "accepted" address on your router...your router may not recognize the device until you do.
# 17 Re: Help With Wifi!
were do i go to allow touch to access the router?
# 18 Re: Help With Wifi!
I had the same issue. Could not connect using WPA with a Linksys router. Had to use WEP. Just make sure it is 128 bit encryption. Apple support said iPOD Touch needs 128 bit.
Also this may be helpful too. Found in the Apple discussion forum.

Good luck

# 20 Re: Help With Wifi!
oh, that link seems like they know what they're talking about. i'll try it right now... as soon as my brother gets back with my iTouch, he stole it!! aaahhh!!
# 21 Re: Help With Wifi!
OMG OMG OMG OMG sgodfrey2000!!!!!!! You're Genius!!! THAT WORKEDD!!!! THANK YOU SO SO SO MUCH!!!!
# 22 Re: Help With Wifi!
I find it interesting that a few of you in this thread had problems with your linksys router and the Touch. I have a linksys gateway (router/modem in one, forgot exactly which model #) and use 64bit WEP encryption. My touch found the network (and after entering the WEP key) signed on without a problem. It keeps a signal even when it drops on the (PC) computers!

hmmm, dlp85x, what are the settings u have on ur router?

The Comcast technician installed the router, not me (Linksys WCG200 if I remember correctly, picture of it here (http://www.linksys.co.jp/product/wireless/g/wcg200jp/images/top_wcg200.jpg)... mine is identical except Comcast has their logo on it instead of Linksys in big letters and its black where its purple in that pic...Comcast usually customizes the front of their routers from what I've seen.) Unfortunately I don't know more about it than what the router's setup pages shows. It doesn't give much information at all outside of the following: SSID broadcast: On, Transmit channel 11, 64-bit WEP encryption, Firmware version 2.0.3.9.31-0721, Operating Mode: CableHome 1.1, DHCP server: enabled. The default transmit channel is 6, but I changed it to 11 since our neighbor's network (also on transmit channel 6) interfered with mine and made the signal cut out.
My Touch simply saw the network, I didn't have to do any setting tweaks, which was a surprise to me. It appears it can sign onto the other 3-4 networks that it can pick up if I had the appropriate WEP key from my neighbors.
If there is anything else you need to know, I can try and find it out. I'm unable to directly connect my computer to the router if that is needed to view some settings as I'm 2 floors below it with a wireless connection (but still get 5/5 bars signal strength on my computer, 3/3 on the Touch!) :)
