What is the bit depth of iPod Touch screen?

And I assume iPhone's as well?
Is it 16 bit ==>> 64,000 colours or 24 bit ==>> 16,000,000 colours
I am sure the previous iPods had 16 bit screens but what about the latest one?

I'm curious about this as well (and also asked this question a while back, with no response). Perhaps, someone with an iPhone or Ipod touch can browse to this page, which claims to test color capacity of a monitor and report the result:

It's over 16 million. First image is completely smooth.

it is possible and very likely that iTunes changes the image bit-depth while it is tranferred over onto ipod so that you see it is smooth, same as it does with videos and music - it trans-codes it. So it is hard to test unless you use iPod under linux perhaps so that images is not altered at transfer.
Anyone knows for sure?

Perhaps you may have missed it, but I linked to a web site. The images on that site don't get processed byiTunes and any (hypothetical) transcoding you might think exists.

Here's another link to a web site that's been used by people to test whether their computer displays were displaying 24 or 18 but tests. This site has 24, 18 and 4 bit sample images, all in PNG format.

Again, if someone with an iPhone or iPod touch can browse this site and the test images and post your results here.
