Got my 16GB today @ 9:00AM east coast. Ordered 9/5 12:34PM no engraving.

The screen is beautiful no issues at all with black negatives.

What's the part/model number and serial prefix that you guys got? Including the week it was built?

that might help to identify if yours are coming out of a different plant or have been built in week 38.

What week is yours? The fourth and fifth digits of your serial number should say. Most likely it's 38

I talked with the Apple store in San Jose and in Palo Alto, both told me that if I brought in a Touch with screen issues they would not charge me a restocking fee. Apple already admitted to a "manufacturing defect" in an article posted on the ilounge front page.

OK...Are you ready...drum roll please....

The preorder unit is PERFECTION! As I stated before I did not have a huge problem with the old one...that is until I seen this one. It is that noticeable. I checked it against the Silence of the Lambs Scene 2 on YouTube as well Mission Impossible 3 that I had ripped. I am AMAZED at the new quality. There are absolutely no 'negative effects' present. I can also move the screen and change angles and the picture quality stays very consistent no matter what angle I am viewing at.

Thanks for the 'push' dontfeedthenerds! Originally I was a doubter that did think it may be encoding but now I have seen it with my own eyes there is a night and day difference in the two. My overall satisfaction with the unit went from loving it to 'you'll have to pry it from my cold dead fingers'! This preorder unit is staying with me!

I will post pictures if others dont beat me to it. We lost our camera but I will try it with my daughters camera and see what kind of results I can get. If I am able to get good shots I will post them in a new thread and let this one go for people to report preorder delivery.

From the early reports it seems as if you have Macy Gray on your box then the unit "should" be fine. If it has the other women on it then you stand a good chance of having an issue with the screen.

Corinne Bailey Rae is the 'other woman' - She is on both of my boxes, I have never seen a box with Macy Gray on it. I did not know that one even existed. Everyone I ever seen had Corinne Bailey Rae.

Not sure where you saw this. As far as I know it is all 16GB models have the same box art. maybe you are thinking of different box art on the 8GB model.

so what i gather from all of this is that you can tell if the model is going to be faulty(or chance of a good one) or have a "fixed" one by looking at the numbers on the outside of the box? sorry if this is a stupid questioin

LOL! madmaxmedia...That's bad. Vanilla Ice is a Chinese counterfeit. McHammer indicates it is a Taiwanese counterfeit.

From Macrumors it sounds like some week 38 units are shipping with the old box art but most have the new Macy Gray box art.

It sounds like soon there will only be Macy Gray box art iPods which should help tell good ones from bad ones.

I think that makes sense Gunnar. I would assume they would use up the old boxes they had. Perhaps week 38 is a sign of good units then?

Build week is part of your serial number, as has been said a couple times in this thread already.

I highly doubt box art has anything to do with what's inside. They probably have the boxes stacked as far as the eye can see. Joe Smith grabs a box to feed the production line machine. It's all random until they run out of a given box design. They won't throw away any boxes cause the week changes.

Mine works perfect, week 37 with Corrine Baily or whatever her name is.

At the mac store, just swapped mine. Got one with week 37 and MA627LL/A

i got my 2nd ipod touch. Week 37. Still has the problem. Not quite as bad- if i tip it slightly away it's unnoticeable, but looking at it straight on gives the negative effect.

I have a box and paid shipping to ship it back to apple for a replacement. Should I do this? What are the chances that my THIRD one will be defective too?

Is the serial number on the box? Want to be sure I can look at the number before buying.

Seriously, it's less about the box art and all about the build week. They almost definitely used the rest of the Correlyn Rae boxes up before switching to the new ones instead of just tossing them out.

What are you testing it with, I am trying to find a video on youtube that will let me know for sure, I have only been looking at black pictures and my screen is perfect.

I just caved in out of necessity and went out and picked up a new Canon point & shoot so could get these pics... With kids in the house it was badly needed anyway! I just shot the pics from Mission Impossible 3 scene and the results speak for themselves...New thread will be started with the pics...

Yes my week 38 unit is perfect and nearly identical at all angles. Straight on it is flawless. My week 36 unit will change dramatically as you change the viewing angle. Straight on was negative blacks on week 36.

I used Silence of the Lambs Scene 2 as found on YouTube. It is a great example and will give negative blacks when viewed head on with a bad LCD as seen on my week 36 unit. On my week 38 unit one it looks like a different movie, I can see everything!

Gunner is right I am sure, they'll use them up and I bet the fixed units are in both boxes at the moment. Soon it will be just Macy Gray. Just my thoughts...

Yep... just tried the silence of the lambs. Screen is even worse than my first ipod touch

Mine plays blacks pretty good(week 37), although I didn't really compare it to week 36 or 38 in person.

It's certainly nothing like the first one with the screen problem, but I'm just wondering if a more recent one would be better. Does that make sense? I just feel I've purchased it too early in its life cycle.

Well it is definitely early in the game and we are early adopters so some of this is to be expeted. But just ask yourself if you are happy with the week 37 unit you have. If you are, enjoy it and move on! You see my pics and to be honest I was happy as all get out with my week 36 flawed unit! How could that be? Because to me the problem was not that bad. Mainly because it would not be present in 95% of the movies I watch, only the darkest scenes and worse when viewing in a darker environment. I can sympathize with those with bad units as mine was though... After comparing the two I obviously will keep my week 38. However... I can honestly tell you if I did not have a preorder on the way I would not have swapped mine unless Apple made a formal announcement.

Sometimes all the hype and complaining can make one see problems they did not even notice before...

I think the 2 #'s that are after the 9C7 is the week, not 48.

Mine came today too! No negative black issue at all, and the Silence of the Lambs YouTube video that others have used for testing looks great on it. My unit is perfect! :D

Upgrading from a 4G 40GB iPod, I have to admit the sound quality on this iPod is MUCH better. The 4G's bass response is distorted and sounds too mechanical when the EQ is set to anything but 'Off' or 'Flat', while the iTouch has strong bass more in line with other portable audio devices/home stereos, and no distortion whatsoever.

The wifi connected almost instantly after entering my WEP code, and I was surprised to find that the iPod can pick up 2 networks than the 3 computers in my house can't even detect via wifi. The internet was about as fast as on my regular computer. The only problem I had was that I was spontaneously brought back to the home page after visiting the iTouch version of iLounge.com. The regular version of this site works perfectly on it.

The sync time on the ipod is definitely much worse than what I had with my 4G via firewire, but its mainly because I'm uploading 2745 songs. Its 50 minutes later after I started and I'm only on song 513/2745! It wouldn't be an issue in the future if I have a few songs to add, though.

The iTouch works perfectly with my iHome IH8, and I was surprised to find the supplied universal dock connector that came with the iTouch fits perfectly into the iHome's connector. I read how previously supplied dock connector pieces wouldn't fit in the iHome. The only problem now is that the connector is white and the iHome is black. But, all that matters is that it works. My old dock from my 4G even works with it too after swapping the firewire cord for the USB one, although I have a piece of tissue paper folded up behind the iTouch for padding since the dock is much wider than it.

I was going to post pictures in this thread, but found out that you can't simply upload from your computer, it has to be already online. If anybody is interested, I'll upload a few pics showing how dark album covers look on my iTouch, I just need help finding a good upload site that won't take too much effort to register with like some sites are. Any suggestions?

Perhaps they are alternating boxes? It could be completely random now that the week 38s are coming in perfectly with different boxes. I'm hoping for a Macy Gray box because I like her cover art much more than Corrine Bailey Rae's.

Really Dogenzaka? My Week 38 is a Corinne Bailey Ray and it is perfect, must not be a real one though? The box art does not explain anything.
