Another iTouch Now or Later question.
Sorry, but I just don't have the time to read though all the posts to see if my questions are answered.
I was just about to order an iPod Touch , then I read about Apple crippling the Calendar feature so that you cannot add/edit from the Touch -- only from your computer, then syncing. The reason that I was drawn to the Touch was for the Calendar/Contacts. I've been needing a PDA and what better than if I could have my music on it too?
Now, before you suggest an iPhone, let me say I don't need the phone and would never consider AT&T. And I really want the 16GB.
If Apple makes the Calendar fully functional in the future, do you think I will be able to make mine functional, or will I be out of luck?
Also, I've read about the problems some people are having with their screens and it seems most people suggest buying from Best Buy so that you can return it if you have a problem. Will Apple not take a faulty unit for exchange?

Apple more than likely won't because they want people to get the iPhone.
I highly suggest iPhone regardless of whether or not you want a service provider. There have been 100% free and successful unlockers out there that are very easy to find that you can use to allow you to use the iPhone without ANY cell phone contract while still being able to use all its features through the WiFi. Plus you get uncrippled features such as the calendar, and the notes application too! The only downside to the iPhone is taht its 8GB and not 16, and it also doesn't have video out, but from what I've heard, the video out doesn't look that great anyways. Oh, not to mention, iPhone has a better battery than the touch giving it 7 hours of video playback vs 5 hours on the touch. I for one would never buy one to use any of the phone features and I would never get a service plan. Only thing holding me back is the space being 8GB.
If you want to wait for apple to make the Calendar full functional in the near future, you should be out of luck.
Apple will take a faulty unit for exchange, its just that there are fewer Apple stores than Best Buy stores.

I think that apple will not add the calendar function, they inteded the iPod Touch to be an entertainment centered device, not a PDA. I doubt they will update it on the existing units.
As for the screen issue I would wait a couple days to see if the ones that people pre-ordered are good or not. If they are order one from apple, if they are not go with best buy or just wait to buy one until the screen issues are resolved.

I know this is completely off topic, but a113524, isn't the 21st a Friday instead of a Thursday?

didn't he write:

In short, I would recommend waiting. I bought one last Thursday, screen problems abound (as reported pretty much everywhere these days), took it back 2 days later and got a full refund.
wait. your wallet will thank you.

Might help if you actually quoted him right then you would see that he said "regardless if you want a service provider or not" rather than "blah blah."

Might help to read others' posts entirely prior to answering and quoting. I have bolded it for you, and don't forget to read the entire post for an explanation, not just the first few words.

You were attracted to the iPod touch for the Calendar feature?
LMFAO!!
It's a media player with the pleasure of having a built-in calendar.
Not a PDA with the pleasure of having a built-in media player.
Either way, just wait like the others said.

Thank you dogenzaka, exactly my thoughts. Look at the last iPods, they only had a viewable calendar.

Complexis,
I'm not about to buy an 8GB iPhone when I don't need/want the phone. I want the 16GB for my music sotrage AND the functionality of an independent calendar. Why is that so much to ask for? Who cares that previous iPods didn't have an independent calendar. That's not really the point, as there are lots of things in the iPod Touch that were never in the other iPods.
Dogenzaka, Why would you laugh that I was attracted to the calendar feature. Read around all the Mac forums. Lots of would-be buyers want the same feature on their iPods and are disappointed in Apple. Let's face it. This move has more to do with protecting the contract Apple has with AT&T.
So, how long until someone hacks the iTouch and can give us the features we want?

The iPod is an Entertainment center device not a PDA how many times to I have to say this. Its only a calendar, go get one at wal-mart, buy a tac and simply stick it on your wall. Wow, you've got an editable calendar! :D
About the hack question there should be a stable way to add things to the iPod Touch in a few weeks, maybe more.

I am not amused. If it's just and entertainment device, why put other apps in it at all? Why not just play music and do nothing else? The truth is people what more from their $400 "entertainment" devices!

Entertainment is not only music. Entertainment includes music, movies, podcast, youtube, etc. (remember the only reason they put safari on there was so you could connect to wireless hotspots that require a log in so you could access youtube and itwms) Not calendar, stocks, weather and notes.
Too many people are thinking of the iPod Touch as a downgrade from the iPhone. Why not think of it as an upgrade from the Video iPod, look at all the features that they added. Yea its a phoneless iphone essentially but look on the brightside.

Yes it is an entertainment center, but I would like to have an editable calendar function. Apple doesn't want to do it, then Apple can do without my $400.
# 15 Re: Another iTouch Now or Later question.
For the last time go buy yourself a wall calendar. The last iPods never had an editable calendar and I never heard anyone complain. Now that the iPhone came out and it has an editable calendar everyone wants one on the iPod Touch. Like I said think of the touch as an upgrade from the iPod video not a downgrade from the iPhone.
Look what they added, youtube, safari, wifi, touchscreen, widescreen, wifi itunes music store. Stop looking on the negative side, we got what we wanted a wide screen touch iPod. Stop complaining about the petty things like a calendar.
Go ahead don't get an iPod Touch, apple will not care one bit. I just think its ridiculous that people cancel their orders because the Touch does not have an editable calendar. I understand why people are canceling because of the screen issues, thats understandable but a calendar, come on! :shake:
# 16 Re: Another iTouch Now or Later question.
Yeah, calendar complaining isn't really pertinent since it is in fact an iPod, not an iPhone, and its been tradition to do that kind of a thing. Though the notes app shouldn't have been removed.

Why don't you get your head out of your butt and see what the customer wants. I'm not interested in video, not enough memory. I'm sure Apple doesn't care if I don't buy an Itouch. It is my money and my wallet went shut.
# 18 Re: Another iTouch Now or Later question.
Why do you have to resort to insulting me when I was having a resonable argument. You have no points at all, what was the point of posting that. If you are going to say something to me have some points to back up your opinion. And by the way you are not the only customer, what you want may not be what other people want, you can't please everyone. There is always going to be people who don't like a product, it may be you or it may not be.
Back to the discussion, does anyone agree with me, am I the only one who thinks this way?
# 19 Re: Another iTouch Now or Later question.
I think maybe the better questions to ask are what are the possibilities once the Touch is hacked?
Being able to edit a calendar, write notes, and add applications are the only thing holding the Touch back from being a palm top computer. That's what I want, and I'm sure once the hacker community has a little time that will be possible. It's already been done with the iPhone.
