How likely is it that well see Apps added to the Touch (by Apple or 3rd party)?

This is becoming increasingly important as we see more and more of how Apple has crippled this device to force it to be a "dumb" media player instead of the smart player it should be that includes some common and desirable tools for folks who don't want/need an iPhone but want a device to supplement their basic cellphone with some tools and of course their media.

Based on what has been done with past iPod software, and of course the iPhone, how likely is it that we'll see third-party solutions to these matters, or even better, Apple coming around and offering them?

*Notes (fully functional)
*Weather
*Google Maps
*Games
*Calendar (fully functional, not neutered so you can't add new appointments/events)

Can these things be added by hacking firmware (especially since we have the iPhone firmware code that includes these items), or will they never see the light of day?

It is likely that the answer to this question will impact sales of the device.

Here's hoping: http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/sdk/ipod-touch-runs-same-applications-as-iphone-296837.php

The whole point on OS X is the ability to easily install applications. Apple will be offering applications and widgets for the iPod Touch.

What I want to see is notes with the ability to edit them. Further more I want to see a Google email client on the iPods touch.

Exactly what you said, I would also like to see a version of ichat or aim on there. If there was some way to be able to play gameboy games on a non-gameboy ;) I would love to see that too.

Maybe some sort of paint app too.

Well, I wouldn't be quick to say Apple will happily and readily add applications to Touch/iPhone. After all, they haven't done that yet with iPhone, even though we've been hoping for it since the release. All Apple has said is that if people want more aps, they can use Web 2.0 programs. That's not a viable solution from my POV. We iPhone owners are hoping that Apple does a 180 and starts either allowing 3rd party aps or providing Apple branded applications either with a firmware update or with a small fee through the iTunes store. As it stands right now, no one knows. Currently the only way to get additional applications on iPhone is to hack it. Since Touch is the same thing as iPhone only with the communications modules yanked out, the same probably holds true for it.

My prediction is we will see one more app from Steve before the Touch ships. Just like the price drop on the iPhone he wll let the hype build while all the controversy over removed features etc goes on.

Then bam special address just as the Touch is about to ship announcing a special app that he decided to add due to all the controversy of his Apple fans. We all forget the iCal removal and bask in the glory of what we believe the killer app that will set it apart fom the iPhone and give the Touch it's own, must have identity.

He pauses and let's the excitement build as he says that the second row of the Touch doesn't look right with only 3 icons instead of four and drumroll....

He announces...iChat for the Touch. And all of us with preorders groan and say that's it?

:D Remember this post!

Im hoping for some more stuff from apple otherwise i will have to go the merry way of hacking the thing. Not that its bad or anything its just easier if apple gives us the apps we deserve in the first place.
