Managing Library

The reason I want 160 Gig iPod is so I can carry all my music, photos, and videos with me.

In reality do I need to carry thousands of songs with me a one time?

I am thinking I could for example buy a 16 Gig iTouch carry 8 Gig of MP3s and 4 Gigs of video, and my pictures.

The question is, is it easy to set up iTunes to give you a fraction of you library one time and the next time give you another selection until over time you have all you MP3s?

How can it be done?

The shuffle does it automatically and if I can do the same thing with an iTouch I would be tempted to buy a 16 Gig or even a 8 Gig iTouch.

Open iTunes - new smart playlist - uncheck "Match the following rule" - check "Limit to" and select however many GBs you want - choose what you want it selected by for example, least played songs or in your case select random.

There ya go :)

I did try it as a test one problem it allowed Audio books to be added to the smart playlist.

I do not want a two hour book in my mini selection of MP3s

Simply uncheck all of the Audiobooks in your library and when creating the smart playlist make sure you tick "Match only checked items".

Seems an easier way to do that is to just match this rule:
GENRE IS NOT 'Audiobook'

And add a date rule to it, so you never hear music that you have listened to recently. So, Last Played Is Not In The Last 31 Days.

For an example of how to do this with some more flair then the hints you've been given so far, check out the document linked in my sig about smart lists.

I've got a library that, in total, is about 175GB of music and 25GB of other media - and I use an 8GB nano to listen to it all with this system.
