Ignorance Is Bliss . . . . Not!

It's been tremendous being a PC user and totally ignoring Apple during the past decade. I didn't know, and could not care less, what was happening on the Macintosh side of the divide. But now I find myself interested in a portable video media player and the iPod Touch really catches my attention.

Were this a Microsoft product my response to purchasing this item so rapidly following its initial release would be "No way am plunking down that kind of money for Bill Gates' first version. Like every other MS product before it it's buggy as heck, I'm not going to be one of Billy Boy's Beta Testers, and I won't even give this thing consideration until at least its second and perhaps even its third version."

This isn't a Microsoft product, however, so I don't know how to respond to Steve Jobs' early releases. Do first generation Apple product tend to fare well? Do they tend to be full of digital and/or electronic bugs? Do prudent buyers of Apple products typically wait for a second or third generation release to be on the safe side?

Thanks much for helping a "non-Apple follower."

Sometimes apple computers make wierd noises from a first gen. But that is fixed usually by software update or by bringing in the product into an apple store. I don't know how long it takes ms to release a service update anymore, but I get updates on my imac every week or two.

So as for the ipod, if there is a large scale problem with the product, apple takes care of it fairly fast and makes a recall or just says to bring it in to the store to get replaced. If firmware can fix it, you'll only be waiting a few days or a week. I'm buying one the first day they come out at the b+m store, there's no better feeling than walking out with a brand new ipod while the tweens are in the back taking pictures of themselves with the isights for their myspace profiles.:D

do they make the stereotypical, strange poses myspace photos tend to have? :D

It's not exactly the first generation, because the entire product design has already been on the market for four months as the iPhone. It's more like 1.5.

But there's no question that there will be a series of upgrades over the next 18 months that will, in a sense, penalize 'early adapters', but then, that's the price you always pay for being an early adapter.

I've always been the one who waits for the 2d or 3d version before buying any Apple product, but this was different. I'm using a 6-year old Mac laptop now that I know could die any minute, and I needed a mobile device to replace my laptop. In my case, the $400 Touch will do most of the work of my $3000 laptop. I consider that a bargain.
