is a shuffle for me?

recently coming back from the gym i broke my 5.5G ipod screen by sitting my fat ### straight on it, ever since then it just bugs me to think that my workout habits were the ones that caused me to break it and wanting to finally buy a armband now is just a waste because first of all they are pretty expensive and second i dont really feel like blowing money on something that is sorta technically broken. i really want the new nano with video but that price is way too expensive for me. so i turned my head towards the shuffle. the main thing i hate is.. it has noo screen, i usually never shuffle my songs on my old ipod and when i do i usually keep skipping to a song that i actually want to listen to, but since its mainly for workout is the shuffle really for me? thanks for bearing the long read.

Yeah, and you can play songs in order as well. The Shuffle is convenient for this type of activity.

Shuffles are tough and cheap.

I've worn mine in: light rain and heavy snow (exposed), steamy and/or flour-laden air of kitchens (I used to manage kitchens), industrial worksites (I'm an electrician). I've dropped it (on concrete from several feet up a ladder - more than once), sat on it, leaned back against a stud and sandwiched it. Works like the day I bought it, and doesn't look too bad for the wear either.

What I'm trying to say (and have said in other threads) is that it will laugh at being squished and dropped and sweat upon - just about all you could do to it in a gym is put it under the stack and smash some overhead rows down on it.

Even then, it was only eighty bucks.

Shuffle = All-Terrain iPod.

I hope they never put a screen on it.

shuffle is a perfect choice for you, and if you have it synced to a playlist with only songs you like there shouldn't be the need to skip through your songs at all.

Even if there is its very convenant to do so if you attach it to your collar much easier than fiddling in your pocket for your nano or 5th gen.

Seriously I thought the shuffle was the dumbest iPod ever until I bought one and for just listening to your best songs its in some aspects better than the nano or the video, like I said its VERY easy to access the buttons when its clipped on the outside instead of in your pocket..of course the 5G/Nano isn't hard either but its cumbersome when you are in the middle of a workout to fiddle with the buttons in your pocket.

i use my 1 GIG v.2 shuffle every day at work, pound for pound thats the toughest little thing ever!!! i work doing steel fabricating, and its getting bounced around all the time, and no problems... just don't let them go thru the washing maching, they aren't quite bulletproof:rolleyes:

I'll vouch for the toughness of the Shuffle as well. Mine's been kicked down the road a couple of times and even stepped on when it was inadvertently knocked off my shirt while running.

If you can handle and ENJOY playing your music on Shuffle mode and you dont mind not being able to find songs, then the Shuffle is for you. Also, if you are tired of worrying about dropping your more expensive iPod, and if you find it too bulky and a pain to carry around, then the Shuffle IS indeed for you.

EDIT: I see you have already broken your "big" iPod, so yes, the Shuffle will save you that pain and be a good partner to you at all times, until you are able to afford a fix for you big iPod or a new one. Id stay away from the Classic for now tho.

I'm not sure why everybody seems to put the caveat "if you can enjoy shuffle mode" into their recommendations or advice. In over a year of having my Shuffle (and using it on a daily, prolonged basis), I have only had it in shuffle mode two or three times. The option could not be there at all for all I use it. Just play the songs in order and you don't have to care whether you "can enjoy shuffle mode" or not. You can choose your order in iTunes - play by artist, album, song title, play count, or your own desired play order or whatever - and the Shuffle will use that order. What does liking shuffle mode have to do with anything?

You are right about that. Most people, including me, seem to use more the Shuffle mode and thats probably why we mention it in our posts, but as TommyB said, you can choose many ways to order your songs and listen to them that way instead of in random play.

Furthermore, the Shuffle doesnt "shuffle" too well in my book. You constantly get two songs or more by the same artist in a row (even if you only have one album from that artist). So shuffle mode is not as great as it could be.

I guess that since "Shuffle" is actually the name of the iPod, most people tend to focus on that mode or feature a lil more.

Go for it! You can have a "Workout" playlist and sync it up.

Yeah, that sounds like the perfect ipod for you. And also if you DO decide to go for an armband, do what I do. Take a cheap black armband that nike or adidas makes (I think you know what I'm talking about) Examine it, and cut a little slit so you go thru one side but don't come out on the other, then stick the clip part inside it and it will stay on. It works for me.

I agree. I made a workout playlist and found that the Shuffle would always play the same songs. I had about 200 songs on it, and it would always seem to play the same ones. I even tried re-sorting the playlist or manually choosing a 'new' song to begin the workout. It would still find the same songs that it seemed to like.

So to get around that, I just made a smart playlist that removes songs I've played in the last seven days.

But to get back to the original thread discussion, I love the Shuffle and couldn't imagine a better workout companion.

I got a Shuffle as a present the other week and was tempted to eBay it, but then I decided what the heck, give it a try - and I'm glad I did. I was using an old iRiver player as my workout buddy (gym/bike/jogging) since it was bulletproof, simple, and small-ish.

But the shuffle is smaller than small. I never look at the screen when I'm working out anyway, so it's not missed. I also don't even use an armband - I just clip it to my shirt. Sound quality is good, buttons are easy to use, and the unit seems able to withstand abuse.

The only complaint I have is having to use iTunes to load up the player. It was so much easier to drag and drop files in Windows using the iRiver. However, once it's loaded up, its good for 12+ hours of music, so I only have to reload it once a week or so.

In summary, go for it!
