error uploading songs to shuffle
I just got a refurbished second generation shuffle and I get and error "Ipod can't be synced. The required disc can't be found." I have no idea what this even means. It almost freezes up itunes when I try and upload from my library. I uninstalled itunes and reinstalled.
What's up wit dat??

yeap, i got the same trouble as well. it's so frustrating, i need help!
# 2 Re: error uploading songs to shuffle
hey, i managed to partially solve the problem, but it's for temporary use only,
1. download the ipod reset utility. reset your ipod.
2. open itunes
3. there would be a window asking you to rename you ipod.
4. after naming your ipod, the would be an auto sync window.
5. click on the auto sync window and click ok.
6. itunes would pick the songs randomly for you.
7. that's the only way where you can upload your songs.
i say this is temporarily because if you download a song later on, you may find the same problem in uploading again. hope this helps.

Thanks Emily,
Thought I was the only one with the problem. I've had my shuffle one month now and
haven't been able to rectify the problem. It will autofill it, but that's no use if you want
to listen to something specific.
I only bought the shuffle because I wanted to try an apple product; I've an MP3 player
from another competitior, but was thinking of getting an IPOD.
Hopefully there's a simple solution to this that someone might be kind enough to
share with us; otherwise, I think I'm going to introduce Mr Shuffle to Mr Hammer and
return to the original player I had.

If you download the ipod reset utility this correction should not be temporary.
My suggestion would be to download ipod shuffle reset utility (it's a separate program outside of itunes).
To find it, try googling "ipod shuffle reset utility"
Make sure it's the version for Windows (if that's what you're running for your OS) and that it supports both the 1st generation and 2nd generation ipod shuffles.
This utility does a great job of resetting the ipod shuffle from weird errors, non functioning, non recognized ipod shuffles.
Give this a whirl and post your results.

Thanks Kevin,
I've already downloaded the 'Ipod shuffle reset utility' for windows - it does indeed
reset the Ipod shuffle. However, it still refuses to let me upload from my library to the
shuffle, and the only way I can listen to music is to autosync again.

Hmm, I'm not sure about that one.
I've never seen that happen before.
Try this:
Under the ipod shuffle settings in titunes (click on your shuffle under devices) and click on the settings tab) try enabling disk use.
Fill up the shuffle to the max capacity with files/songs from your computer (NOTE: be sure to copy files over, don't move them from the original location).
Then create a folder on your desktop called temp and copy everything from the shuffle back to the hard drive.
What this will do is enable you to test the read/write capabilities of the flash memory and ensure the memory is good.
I'm starting to wonder if you have bad flash memory in your shuffle.
What kind of an error message do you get when you try to drag and drop songs to your shuffle inside of itunes?
# 7 Re: error uploading songs to shuffle
Could indeed be bad memory although it should also cause problems with autosync which it did not. If you need to test the memory, I would suggest you try this tool ( http://www.copytrans.net/doctor.php)

Thanks for all the responses - when I get a chance I'll try them them out.
Phil - just out of curiosity - what if most of my tracks are protected - I have to delete them all? I'm guessing that if I returned to the other MP3 player I had originally, I
wouldn't have this problem?
# 11 Re: error uploading songs to shuffle
I think its the most recent version of itunes that stops you from syncing protected, but yes Itink you do have to delete them all for it to work :(
# 12 Re: error uploading songs to shuffle
Thanks,
Back to the original MP3 player I had - can't lose the whole library of tracks I'd built up.

Or wait for a new version of itunes??
