Need Help Deciding Between iPod shuffle or iPod Nano
My husband & I just joined a gym today. I have a iPod Video but I don't want to take that to the gym because of the hard disk in the iPod.
Which iPod would be best to use in a gym the iPod shuffle or the iPod Nano?

Depends on how long you're going to be at the gym... you may want to have more space for songs.
The screen doesn't really matter, because you're not likely to be looking at it... at least, I wouldn't be.
iPod nano, though, supports Nike+, if that sort of thing would interest you.
Either of them would be just as good for the gym.

Your current cellphone may already be equipped for songs playing capability.

Do NOT buy a shuffle. Because there is no screen and can't control what plays. You'll love the new nanos. trust me I've been through this before. Cool!

If Apple goes by you, why they can just shut down the Shuffle production line.

Shuffle would be the best IMO.

I would suggest the Shuffle since it is very small, can clip onto anything, does not have a screen that will scratch and is easy to use without looking at the device. Plus, refurbs go for $50 US so its a good deal.

I have a Shuffle and love it. I like the sound, the simple controls and the fact that there is no screen to scratch. I don't care about video, but there is one reason I might get a Nano, and that is - the Shuffle can't shut off on its own. It will play endlessly until the battery runs out or you turn it off. I would like to fall asleep listening to it but not have it on all night. You can do that with the Nano.
You can control what the Shuffle plays. You just put the playlist in the order you want and play it in straight order.

Buy the Shuffle.
The question of "how long" you'll be at the gym is not appropriate, because a Shuffle can hold way more music (unless your library is at the highest bit rate imaginable) than you'll need. Mine has just shy of sixteen hours of music on it, and it's only 3/4 full. I seriously doubt you'll be at the gym for more than sixteen hours.
The question of durability need not even arise. My Shuffle has been dropped multiple times on concrete and cement floors. It's been in light rains (and I wear it clipped to the back of my collar - where it can easily get rained on). It's been crunched and smashed and banged (I used to build houses, and now I'm an electrician - industrial job sites are dirty, dusty, loud, and not at all gentle).
The battery lasts more than enough time for a full 8-hour workday (with numerous, pauses, track skipping, and volume getting cranked when working around power tools), plus a two-hour drive (one way). I just charge it every night as I sleep.
It's a bit scratched, and a bit dirty (lost my second rubber skin a few months ago - oh, well), but that's to be expected in my line of work. That's why I bought it (no way I'd bring my 60GB iPod 5G to work! Poor thing would have a conniption). Only eighty bucks new, no huge tragedy if it went kerplonk and spoke no more.
At the end of the day, the Shuffle is totally enough iPod for something as tame as a gym workout (which I've also put mine through many times). It is enough: durable; capacity; battery life; replaceable.
Just my testimony, though. It's your money.

For the gym it'd be ######ed to say anything other than the shuffle..shuffle is very easy to access when you are working out, it has NO SCREEN to worry about, its not bulky you won't find yourself shifting in your pockets to press buttons like the nano.
The shuffle is the #### for activities such as the gym.
