3rd generation problem; is it the battery?

My 3rd gen iPod seemingly depletes its whole battery in about a minute when syncing.

I left it on the charging dock for several hours, took it off, plugged it into my Mac via USB. The songs start syncing, but within a minute or so the iPod just shuts down. I was able to restart it and briefly see that the battery indicator showed empty.

This is a 3rd party replacement battery that I bought and installed several months ago. Has it really gone bad this fast? Is it time to buy a new iPod?

Sorry I'm answering your post so late--

Syncing a 3rd G iPod via USB will drain the battery fairly quickly, as the 3g's can't re-charge via USB. (One minute seems to be really quick though.)

The 3g's will charge via firewire, so if you have a firewire port on your computer and a firewire connecting cable I'd try that. Not sure if they're still available, but Apple also used to make a dual cable for the 3g's. At one end, it connects to the iPod with two cables coming out of it. One of the cables was USB for connecting to the computer for syncing. The other cable was to connect to a firewire AC adapter to plug into the wall, providing power to the iPod while it was syncing.

Good luck!

Yeah, I've tried Firewire to sync the iPod -- Firewire is what the iPod shipped with, actually. That doesn't work either. It causes the iPod to freeze up and iTunes to crash. I think I learned on this forum that the newer versions of iTunes don't support Firewire. So I'm still stuck.

try a program called Ephpod, i used this program when iTunes wasn't avaliable for the PC. heck the last version of iTunes doesn't even like my 3rd Gen iPod lol (playlists don't show up etc).

however not sure if your using windows or Mac
