Popular Science: Nokia N95-3 trounces iPhone 1.1.1?
As much as I love Apple (less lately - definitely agree with this (http://ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/customers-ask-is-apple-going-rotten/) after my recent iMac woes (http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=5483378) ), I have to say Popular Science hit the nail on the head with this one.

Though I disagree with the point about E-mail (claiming G-Mail accessibility to be the be-all and end-all of E-mail connectivity is unfiar IMO), I think everything else is fairly written.
Time to save up for an N95-3 + 160GB iPod Classic

All that article talks about is how that stupid nokia uses 3G network, and that you can also use it as a modem. It has been said a million times that numerous times that 3G will be available on the iPhone later on. That’s it. I personally think that you have to be mentally ######ed and or visually impaired to EVER, and I mean EVER, to choose that ugly ### Nokia over the iPhone. There is not a single phone on the planet that beats the iPhone. Sure it’s not perfect, lacking a few things, however there is not a device that even comes close to today’s iPhone, or will in years. And I’m tired of people saying that Asian phones are advanced and far superior. That’s just bunch of bull. They just have faster networks. You can use your phone as a credit card, who cares. They have TV on their phones, so does Verizon but no body cares about that. And you can have video chats with your friends, wow big deal. The landline video phones have been available for years and nobody uses them.
So long story short iPhone is by far the best portable device in it’s class on the planet. And people who say otherwise are simply ignorant.
# 3 Re: Popular Science: Nokia N95-3 trounces iPhone 1.1.1?
The only "ignorance" I see is ignoring the facts, automatically declaring any non-iPhone "ugly," then declaring the iPhone the winner.
Looks are entirely subjective.
Interface: The iPhone's is more slick, the N95-3's is more powerful. The N95-3 is customizable, the iPhone is not. Less filling? Tastes great? This is also subjective.
Data and Web: Prophesize all you want about a 3G iPhone, no such animal physically exists in present-day reality. In the here and now, the iPhone uses EDGE, the N95-3 uses EDGE and AT&T's 3G. 3G >> EDGE for the same monthly price. Both devices have WiFi. The iPhone does have the better browser, display, and interface - which are all essentially useless away from a WiFi spot, since EDGE sucks.
Locking and Pricing: You pay full price for an iPhone and are still AT&T's slave for 2 long years. The N95-3 costs more but iit's unlocked, hence no contract. If AT&T offers the N95-3 with a 2-year contract, its price will likely be on par with the iPhone.
Battery: To this point in time, the iPhone wins (versus the old N95-1). The X-factor here is the N95-3's bigger battery.
Adding Apps: You can do this on the N95-3 (without "bricking" the phone or voiding the warranty). You can't do this on the iPhone (unless you want to risk "bricking" the phone and voiding the warranty). End of story.
Calls: Nokia have amazing reception and call quality. iPhones are hit-or-miss. Contacts management is a wash between the two: iPhone has the better phonebook, N95-3 has the easier speed dialing.
E-Mail: Going only by built-in clients, the iPhone is better. But you can install 3rd-party e-mail clients on the N95-3; there are even "push" applications available. Tough call here.
Games: N95-3 has 'em, iPhone doesn't. Next!
Music: This is really tough. The iPod-iTunes combo is unbeatable, no question. And the iPhone's wired sound quality is better than the N95's. But 4 points push this argument in Nokia's favor: (1) the stupid recessed headphone jack on the iPhone (2) the N95-3's support for stereo Bluetooth headsets (3) Nokia "N" phones now have pseudo-iTunes compatibility via their own Media Transfer software for the Mac (4) for Windows users, the N95-3 works with Windows Media Player; the iPhone does not.
GPS, Camera: The N95-3 laughs at the pitiful iPhone. Oh, and the N95-3 runs Google Maps, too, after a free download.
And let's not forget other basic functions the iPhone lacks that even my 4-year-old T616 included, such as MMS, voice dialing, and uncrippled Bluetooth.
The iPhone is the Paris Hilton of phones. The N95-3 is Albert Einstein's brain in Scarlett Johansson's body. IMO, of course, since facts mean nothing in this forum.
# 4 Re: Popular Science: Nokia N95-3 trounces iPhone 1.1.1?
what makes you say that nokia is more powerful? Have you even used the iPhone to talk so much #### about it? It is by far superior in user interface, performance, storage. 3g is coming to the iphone, so educate your self before you make such comments. Im sure gps will also be included in iphone 2.0. Apple cant include every single thing in this version, otherwise it would have set them back at least one more year. Iphone is the next ipod, and in a year or two even people like you will have one. And if you are so proud of your nokia what are you doing here in a first place?
# 5 Re: Popular Science: Nokia N95-3 trounces iPhone 1.1.1?
I have both phones and I will give you my honest opinon later.
Quickly though I prefer the iphone. Yes the N95 has more features but the GPS is flaky and the iphones browser and ipod functions as well as the OS and interface are miles ahead of the N95.
The N95 definately has a better camera and despite saying the GPS is useless it does occasionally work and I have used it when lost... so while I prefer the iPhone I am happy to carry two phones for the time being! Ill get into it more later!

I work in the mobile industry here in the UK. Basically, the iphone is coming out here on November 9th, and I have recent been sent to LA for a Nokia party where I tried out the N95-3, N95 8GB and also the iphone. This is my honest opinion (and im both a Nokia AND an Apple fanboy, so I like both these companies, thats why im here, because I like Apple).
Basically, here in the UK, a non 3G handset is an absolute no go. I mean we are starting to move into the HSDPA age here, which is 3.6mbps, and to compare that for a start with the iphones pathetic EDGE connection would just be silly.
secondly, I own a N95 now. I was planning on getting the iphone, and after I had a little play on it I loved it even more, however, here in the UK, its pretty much already obsolete before its been released. No offence to the US market, but the UK market, mobile phone wise, is far far superior to the US market (pretty much the only thing which is better in the UK then in the US). Now, most people want everything for nothing in their phone.
Personally, until the 3G iphone is released, there is no point even comparing these phones. The N95 is on a whole different level to the iphone. 3G, MMS (Basic funtions), 5MP camera, 30fps video recording, GPS and more.
Personally, I hope the iphone fails in the UK. It shows apple that they cant just move a product from one countries market to another. The markets are VERY different, and to just move the iphone from the US to the UK was stupid. They should have looked at what the UK consumer wants, and what they need. In the UK, we get most of our phones for free. Now, Apple are expecting us to ship out 269 and then 35 a month for a crap tariff. I just hope it fails, and it will teach Apple better for the future.
Also, please stop using the excuse that the 3G iphone is coming. There is no hard proof what so ever that the 3G iphone is coming anytime soon, but simply a word from steve jobs that "we are working on it". To me, that could be a month or a year, we are working on it is no proof that its coming. At the end of the day, it hasnt got it now, so we cant really use a feature that it hasnt actually got "yet" as a defence of the iphone.
# 7 Re: Popular Science: Nokia N95-3 trounces iPhone 1.1.1?
The N95 has more features, yes but the battery life is terrible and the phone isn't exactly attractive - although compared to the N91 I have its a world away!
The iPhone is sleek, sexy and feels high quality compared to the N95 and it just works - its snappy and does what it says.
Maybe if I had to chose one phone to carry around I would miss the others features, but I carry both around so I never lose it - if I need good pics I have the nokia if I need browsing I have the iphone.
They perfectly compliment each other... EDGE though is so slow it would be quicker to find a wi-fi hot spot then use it!

Not to sound too rude about it, but that is spoken like a true "fanboy". Basically, anything the iPhone can do is the best way and anything it can do doesn't matter. Oh, and toss in a "anyone who says otherwise is simply ignorant." This is exactly the type of blind following that a company wants for it's products. Congrats, you fell for it and look like a laughing stock.
For those who retain their objectivity, the article brings up some fair points. I particularly don't care for the N95 because it's more about the interface for me, but I sure do feel the pain when I'm stuck with Edge, trying to retrieve some key data. Very nice product and I hope it drives some competition into this space.
# 9 Re: Popular Science: Nokia N95-3 trounces iPhone 1.1.1?
Obviosly, it depends on what you're looking for.
3G would be nice, but I'm not clamoring for it like some people. I like the interface, design and integration with iTunes that the iPhone has. The screen on the Nokia doesn't look very good judging by that pic, though I could be wrong.
If you like the 3G/modem features of the Nokia, it looks okay.

iPhone fanboys everywhere unite!
# 11 Re: Popular Science: Nokia N95-3 trounces iPhone 1.1.1?
I would have to put my money on the iphone. The iphone is the wave of the future no matter how you look at it.
# 12 Re: Popular Science: Nokia N95-3 trounces iPhone 1.1.1?
i'm a phone designer and i have to say, my phone, called the XK-2000 will beat them all. sometime, in the near future, it will have GPS, a laser stun gun, can walk my dog, drive my car, 5G, AND be able to SMS to more than one person.
can the iphone do that?
of course, my phone doesn't exist yet, but it will. really.
