Interesting article... how apples friendly face isnt so friendly

Basically a well thought out rant against recent apple practices, most notably the ringtone controversy and backward compatibility issues and why apple has chosen to do what it has done to it's loyal customers... greed.

You would be surprised how many people still don't know.

Even iLounge is seeing the dark side of recent apple practices:

Apple has done some very questionable things as of late.
I'm not quite sure I'm on board about the ringtone thing.
Someone said if you wanted to you could just purchase a ringtone for 99 cents without buying the whole song if you wanted to, right?
Should we have the right to use a song we purchased as exactly as we please, probably, but I guess in general I'm not to bothered about ring tones, so I stay out of the controversy.

Great article. Apple has been moving slowly towards this "less customer centric" for a couple of years now, but the disappointing launch of iPhone seems to have greatly accelerated the effect. They've taken so many odd missteps recently, it makes me wonder what the future holds for Apple. I've been an Apple Fanatic since the Mac Plus but the cult holds less and less appeal for me as Apple disrespects the loyal fanbase again and again.

It certainly seems to me that using a song you already own as a ringtone is a matter of fair use. Forcing people to pay for the song again just to repurpose it is amazingly rude and greedy.

I don't know why Apple and the record companies can't just let ringtones go. Does their greed know no bounds?

Ringtones have already been generating a lot of money long before the iphone came out. With the iphone, the relationship between music players and cellphones has become MUCH closer, meaning that the services that were available to obtain ringtones are obsolete on the iphone since you now have your entire music library available. In Apple's defense, they probably had little choice given the relationship they have with record companies in the itunes store. This is not a good sign. Imagine, if the itunes store gets so big that the sales of ipods would not be significantly impacted by its ability to play non-drm music. If the iphone can disallow non-itunes bought ringtones, they can also disallow non-drm/itunes store bought music. It will happen, and the apple you once knew will just be another microsoft. They were better as an underdog.
