A question about the Internet/Email

Do you have to be near an access point? Or does it work wherever you get a phone signal?
Sorry if this is a noob question. I couldn't find an answer in the other threads.

Works when you're in an access point over Wi-Fi (for free or for a small fee depending on what access point you're trying to use) and over EDGE when you're not near an access point (EDGE data transfers are part of the unlimited data plan).

EDGE is much slower than Wi-Fi. iPhone will attempt to use Wi-Fi whenever possible.

iPhone will attempt to use WIFI only if you have the WIFI turned on. If WIFI antena is turned on all the time it will drain the battery much quicker.

It's actually not that bad. I leave my Wi-Fi turned on all the time.
