Using US iphone in the UK (and newbie qus.)

Probably no one knows this as its all so new in the UK, but here goes (answer when anyone gets to know anything):

0. Is the SIM card easy to get out (or is it hidden with the battery behind the back panel) ?
1. Is the US iphone identical to the UK except for the SIM provider lock ?
2. If I buy an iphone in NY. Unlock it (I know how).
- Could I use it in UK with O2 contract chip ?
- Could I activate it in the UK, and the UK O2 service will just think its a UK phone ?
3. To anyone out there using an unlocked iphone with a non-AT&T chip. Does all the functionality work (e.g. EDGE, email) ?

At this point speculation will do :)

0. Yes theres a little sim card tray you pop out the top by sticking a paper clip into a tiny hole next to it.

1. Yes apart from the UK one has the later firmware (1.1.1) but I'm sure the US iPhones will be updated soon.

2. Yes you can use it in the UK on any network. You don't need to activate it on O2, just bypass the activation as soon as you get the phone, then unlock it and you're done.

3. Haven't got my iPhone yet (hopefully it'll come tomorrow) but all functionality will work on it. EDGE will work depending on what network you are on and their coverage.

Likewise I would be interested to hear how it goes.

I'm desperate to go this route, but I'm also very nervous that Apple will find a way to FORCE 1.1.1 onto the iPhone and totally brick it.

Also, what about if I decide I want to 'go legit' with the official O2 tariffs for some reason at a later date. Would that be possible?

Finally, the US iPhone is not covered by Apple Warranty over here in the UK if you import, is it?

In fact, that last point is enough for me to think "No way am I risking it." I've read enough about other people getting even the slightest sort of issue with something that required a swap at an Apple Store. It would be totally impossible over here. iPod Touch all the way for me I think, then get a UK iPhone when I'm happy that it can be unlocked, and maybe sell the touch.
