I had the same tough time trying to figure it out. It is actually pretty easy. When you are looking at the ipod interface on the screen hold the menu button (on the screen, not your ipod). After a second or two the screen will go blank, or you will get the video disabled screen, at this point you can controll the ipod directly from the scroll wheel and load your video or pictures. You can even control music if you want to. The picture slide show with music is pretty cool. Oh, make sure you say tv out -> on.
