new 6GB Harddrive needs formatting for iPod
Hei, Iv got a 6GB ipod, and the harddrive broke.
Now I bought a new Hitachi 6GB Microdrive, it fits and all, but is not recognized
by the iPod.
Certainly it needs to be " formatted". Can anyone tell me how ( I work on a mac)?

6GB iPod thats a iPod mini right? Yeah you probably have to format it, can it be done on itunes if not you're probably need some sort of specialized software

I personally find it easier to format the drive before installing in the iPod - I bought a 1.8" to 3.5" adapter from ebay - it cost me about 3 (or about $6) and I can then pop it in my external drive caddy or attach it to my main computer as a slave - perform a quick format and then put it in the iPod - as soon as you connect the iPod to the computer, iTunes will launch with a message saying it has detected an iPod in restore mode and you can restore it from there - if not download iPod updater and run it - it will detect the iPod and restore it.
I've done it once or twice :D
Hard drives are such a pain in the bum I've just modded my 4G to run off compact flash. I slapped an 8GB card in for now - when the 12GB and 16GB cards come down in price I'll whip the 8GB out to use in my camera.
Hoping to have a few less hard drive failures :D

Hi,
I'm about to do this, when the postal strike is over and I rx my 8GB drive  ...
Do you Format it to Fat32 ?...I'd read somewhere this shouldn't be done...and also that you should be able to drop it straight in the mini, connect to PC (apologies OP, I'm on Windows XP) and iTunes should kick straight in and offer to restore it ?
Please let me know about Fat32 & whether or not a straight connect / iTunes thing should work ??
Cheers,
Dave.
p.s. - can't wait for them 16GB cards to come down in price.....and waiting for 128GB cards to be developed - now you're talking!!!:D

Answer...yeah...but make sure you're using the right CF to motherboard cable...I swapped mine as I put my original 4GB drive, with cable still attached into a faulty 2nd Gen mini for my son and used a cable from a faulty drive to connect my CF type I 8GB flash drive...it wouldn't work, no way, no how. Checked the cable against the one that went with the 4GB drive - slightly different. Managed to find one that matched on another faulty Mini drive - worked straight off, no probs. Offered to restore in iTunes, restored ok, loaded ok, played great ....I had formatted it in WinXP already though.
Now got 8GB CF typeI drive, 850mah battery mega-mini...happy as!!! :D
Just testing sons Mini with first charge of 50p (claimed) 850mah battery from USA - been running for 8 hours off first charge so far and battery indicator showing half full still...we will see...looking good though...and it came with a set of mini screwdrivers - amazing - all for 50p (think that's about 25cents?), all the way from USA - amazing!! - luckily customs didn't spot it and whack another 10 worth of tax on top!!! :D
