You activate the iPhone using a third party application and then insert your T-Mobile SIM.

Is there still a search button on the forums, I forgot.

# 4 Re: have iphone, have t-mobile, need to unlock
Before anyone unlocks an iPhone, go check out the Macintosh section at Ars Technica. There's a rumor that Apple is going to brick all sim-hacked phones with the next firmware update.
# 5 Re: have iphone, have t-mobile, need to unlock
This one ( http://www.hackint0sh.org/forum/showthread.php?t=6378 ) seems to be the most successful. As for the rumor of Apple bricking unlock iphones -- as long as you're ok with the current firmware, there's shouldn't be any reason to update.
I can see them relocking the iphone with a firmware, but not bricking. If they relock, people can still do a fake activation and it's just like an ipod touch. If they brick people's iphones, they just turned some of their biggest fans into Apple haters. That's not smart business.

Not to mention that "bricking" someone's iPhone is illegal, right?

Why would it be illegal?
# 8 Re: have iphone, have t-mobile, need to unlock

I was under the impression that upon purchasing the product, that the company has no legal right tampering with your property to the point of "bricking" and/or rendering it useless.

I really have no idea if there are laws to that effect or not, but I'd assume that by hacking the device you probably waive your right to sue over it.
# 10 Re: have iphone, have t-mobile, need to unlock
This is why i have been waiting to unlock mine, i can not seem to find a answer to wether or not my unlocked iphone can be briked or re-locked if i never update the firmware? i assume it can not be but i am not willing to risk it at this point. if anyone can link me information or knows for sure i would appreciate some help. i have no problem with keeping it unlocked and with its current firmware since i pretty much wanted it for the ipod features, but would like to use my gsm service (net10) or get t-mobile pre paid. thanks
# 11 Re: have iphone, have t-mobile, need to unlock
First of all I hope you haven't made any attempts to unlock it so far, if you have IGNORE what I write below and just email me at hbsocal.slo@hotmail.com. The reason being that if you have already tired running some application and failed then your phone is no longer in default factory setting meaning there are some complicated steps to restore it 100% (iTunes restore does not do a 100% restore). I wouldn't blame you though as I got mine two days ago and I spent two days of trial and error to finally get it to work because there is not complete tutorial on the internet, each tutorial skips some crucial HUGE important part so its damn near impossible for the average person to find the files needed and implement them properly. Thankfully you have me
Now the process to unlock a brand new (virgin) iPhone is very simple and its free, however if you have already played around with it and done so unsuccessfully then you must restore the phone to a "virgin" state and this is more complicated than unlocking but still easy enough for anyone to do. I do not have the instructions for this with me at work, so e-mail me if you need to "virginize" your iPhone.
To unlock:
First here are the files you need:
- anySIM (An Unlocking application that you install onto and run from your iPhone) - downoad here (http://www.deadbeef.cn/files/anySIM.pxl)
- iBrickr (A program that you run from your PC and install various files onto your iPhone) - download here (http://ibrickr.com/downloads/ibrickr_v0.8.zip)
- PACAY (A program that activates you iPhone) - download here (rapidshare) (http://rapidshare.com/files/56140411/PACAY.rar)
- Itunes Mobile Device DLL - download here (rapidshare) (http://rapidshare.com/files/56134826/iTunesMobileDevice.rar)
1. You must make sure that you have the correct firmware installed.
2. Enter *3001#12345#* on the keypad.
3. Press Call.
4. From the Field Test Menu Choose versions and look for a Firmware version that starts with 3.14. If you have 3.14 you are at the current firmware in this guide which is 1.0.2. If you are not you will need to update your firmware.
5. Connect your Iphone to your computer. If already connect ignore this step.
6. Open Itunes. When you get activate with AT&T or Invalid sim close Itunes.
7. Create a folder named C:\iphone on your computer.
8. Extract the contents of iBrickr into the folder C:\iphone\ibrickr\(extracted files go here)
9. Extract the file Itunes Mobile Device DLL and place the file into the same folder as the iBrickr files (C:\iphone\ibrickr)
10. Run iBrickr, double click the .exe file located in C:\iphone\ibrickr\ibrickr.exe
11. Wait for it to connect, if it does not try restarting the program and/or reconnecting your iphone until it detects the iphone, when it does detect it a large button saying "Free Your Phone" will pop up.
12. Click "Free Your Phone" and follow the instructions.
13. Once it finishes, close iBrickr
14. Extract the PACAY files into C:\iphone\ibrickr
15. Run the file "(CLICK HERE) activate.bat" this file maybe in a sub folder called point and click activation (with YouTube) Follow the instructions, including restarting your phone.
16. Extract anySIM into C:\iphone\ibrickr
17. Run iBrickr again, you will see several options this time, click on "Applications" and the click on "Install PXL". Follow the instruction, this will require you to reboot your iPhone several times. When finished close iBrickr.
18. Run iBrickr again, and click on "applications" again, this time you should see an option "install from .pxl file" click on it. Locate the "anysim.pxl" file which should be located in C:\iphone\ibrickr\anysim.pxl and open it.
19. Once iBrickr has finished installing the file, close iBrickr.
20. Now reboot your iPhone
21. On your iPhone, go to the main menu and select "Settings", then "General" and set the "Auto-lock" feature to "Never"
22. Press the home button to go back to main menu, you should see a new icon "anySIM" click on it.
23. Slide the button to unlock
24. Another screen comes up, scroll to the bottom and press the red button. Allow roughly 10min for it to finish unlocking your iPhone. Be patient, at time it will seem as though it froze but it hasn't and rebooting during this process will give you lots of headaches.
25. Once anySIM finishes, it will tell you if the unlock was successful or if it failed. If it is successful then congrats, your phone is unlocked, just turn off the iPhone replace the AT&T SIM card with your own, restart and you're done. If the unlock failed try swapping SIM cards anyway as the unlock may have worked anyway, if it doesn't work then run anySIM again. If still no luck start checking on Google and Forums... good luck.

# 15 Re: have iphone, have t-mobile, need to unlock
So supersumo, you have the iPhone working with T-Mobile...
How is it? Does everything work OK?
# 16 Re: have iphone, have t-mobile, need to unlock
if you read the ARS artical you would have seen there too that unlocking your phone is NOT ILLEGAL. yes thats right the government say we have every legal right to unlock our phones and i quote...
"The provision likely to be of most interest to consumers is the one allowing cell phones to be unlocked and used on other networks. The Copyright Office allowed this exception because the software that prohibits users from accessing their phone's firmware has little to do with copyright and much to do with a business model. "The underlying activity sought to be performed by the owner of the handset is to allow the handset to do what it was manufactured to dolawfully connect to any carrier," writes the government in explanation. "This is a noninfringing activity by the user... The purpose of the software lock appears to be limited to restricting the owners use of the mobile handset to support a business model, rather than to protect access to a copyrighted work itself."
so would it be illegal for Apple to brick unlock phones? well unfortunately there is nothing in the law to stop them from making the unlock not work. as to bricking an unlocked iphone, i think they would be stupid to do so. it would cause a huge backlash from there customers i would think, not to mention the PR that would be generated by that. spend $300 on a product, legally unlock it, then have a company pretty much destroy your purchase? i would hope that Apple has a better head on it's shoulders.
i think the ARS artical is a tad alarmist. i really hope that i am proved right and that apple would at least just go with the "were not going to care if the updates break the unlock" rather than actively going after unlocked phones.
i have my iphone unlocked working on tmobile. i have everything set so that nothing updates automatically and i will wait and see what happens with the new update.
